Tommy Zeigler has been on death row for 42 years and for more than half that time, he’s been trying to convince the state of Florida to allow for DNA tests that might help exonerate him. But the state continually refuses. About 20 other men are in a similar situation, imprisoned in Florida since the 1970s or ’80s and arguing that it’s inherently unfair to deny them access to 21st century science. Leonora LaPeter Anton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the Tampa Bay Times, and photographer Cherie Diez have followed the case for years. In 2018, they traveled around Florida and into Georgia to interview dozens of people, some involved in the police work or prosecution, others who believe in Zeigler’s innocence.

Very engaging podcast

I really enjoyed this podcast. I have no issues with the narrator’s diction, inflection, reading skill, or vocabulary. And speaking of vocabulary, a note to HooverPF: I believe that the word you were looking for in your “sticky candy” comment was “hampering”, not “harboring”. And, I don’t hear any sticky candy effect. I think ot’s a compelling story and the execution and editing is commendable.

Please get the food out of your mouth

Interesting case. I’ll be doing more research on my own, as it’s very hard to listen too, due to your lack of pronouncing certain words correctly, stumbling over your own reading, and it sounds like you have sticky candy on your mouth harboring your speech.

Excellent

Excellent investigative journalism! This crime is identical to one that was covered in another podcast, but I can’t remember the name. I think it occurred in Alabama or Georgia around the same time. It makes me wonder whether there is a connection. It would be interesting to have someone dig and see how many furniture store robbery/murders were taking place across the south at that time. Perhaps there was traveling robbers hitting furniture stores and killing all who were in them. Also, the one dude died with pockets full of cash, how is that not indicative of his participation in the crime??? I hope Tommy sees justice in his lifetime. Forty years on death row is just inhumane. People who are guilty do not cry out about their innocence for 40 years. Free Tommy!
