3 Ways to Be a Better Friend to Yourself in Midlife

Today, we’re diving into the topic of how to be a better friend to yourself in midlife. I know this idea can sound odd, especially when we try as Christian women to love others the way God asks us to. Thinking too much about ourselves can make us feel uncomfortable. But being a good friend to yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. In fact, it’s a reflection of God’s love in your life. A love that’s contagious and draws others in. When you nurture your well-being by being a friend to yourself, you’ll be better equipped to live out your calling to love others well. And there’s no better time to tackle this topic than midlife, when you might be adjusting to spending more time alone than you were ready for.  So, let’s talk about three practical ways you can be a better friend to yourself in midlife and experience more of the joy God has waiting in your second half. Jody Cates is a faith-based life coach who helps Christian women navigate the changes and challenges of midlife and step into the joy-filled second half God created them for. 19: It’s Time to Say Goodbye to "Should" and Hello to More Joy in Midlife

It seems like the voices of “should” are everywhere, especially this time of year:  I should get in better shape. I should save more money. I should finally get organized. I should … well, the list goes on and on, doesn’t it? And if you’re someone who likes to get stuff done, it’s easy to let those “shoulds” take over when planning the days and months ahead, But what if, instead of piling on the shoulds, we approached goal-setting differently? What if we focused less on what we “should” do and more on what we feel God inviting us to do? Because life doesn’t have to be about fixing ourselves; it can be about honoring who we are and who God is calling us to become. In today’s episode, let’s talk about why midlife is a great time to say goodbye to “should” so you can say hello to more joy right now. Is it any wonder that these special days can seem to lose their luster? I'm here to share that they don't have to. 17: Overcome Resistance With 5 Better Ways to Ask for What You Want

What's keeping you from asking for what you want in midlife? You might think it’s because you’re not clear yet on what you want your next chapter to look like. Or maybe you’re feeling a bit rusty when making requests for yourself after years spent taking care of others You tell yourself that you’ll start asking for more when you grow more confident. While it’s true that gaining clarity and confidence is incredibly important to asking for what you want, that’s not all that’s going on. You’re also dealing with Resistance. You see, our brains are wired to feel safe with what we know. So, Resistance pops up whenever we try to make a change or try something new outside our comfort zone. And Resistance comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. It can be external from family, friends and co-workers who like things just the way they are. And it can be internal in the form of procrastination, self-doubt, worry, and other unhelpful mindsets and habits that keep you doing what you’ve always done. Resistance makes it very hard to ask for what you want. The good news is that Resistance and asking are so closely linked that by making just a few changes to the way you ask, you can overcome Resistance – no matter where it’s coming from. In today’s episode, let’s talk about 5 changes you can make in how you ask for what you want that will help you overcome Resistance and get the outcomes you’re looking for in midlife and beyond. Most of us have encountered at least one woman who seems nice at first, welcomes you into the fold of friendship then subtly – or not so subtly – makes you start questioning yourself and wondering if you’re imagining things. Things like being targeted for unkind or critical remarks. Or becoming the subject of gossip. Or learning that you’ve been excluded from an event where other friends were invited. Surely no one would do these things intentionally, right? It’s hurtful and confusing. It can be downright infuriating. It’s also a sign that you’ve stepped into the line of fire from a grown-up mean girl. Join me on today’s episode, where we’ll talk about why some women are mean to other women and how you can respond in ways you’ll feel good about the next time you come face to face with a grown-up mean girl in your life.
