Leadership Shift #182 : What Brilliant Women Get Wrong About Executive Presence

You’ve been told you need more executive presence. Speak with more confidence. Be more concise. Command the room. Look more executive. So you start paying attention to everything. How you dress. How you sound. How much you speak. Whether you seem confident enough. Whether your answer was polished enough. Whether everyone in the room thinks you belong there. But here’s the problem: The harder you work to perform executive presence, the less present you actually become. Because real executive presence isn’t about becoming more polished, more serious, or more like the woman three levels above you. It’s about trusting yourself enough to stop proving you belong, and start participating like you already do. In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I’m diving into: Why conventional advice about executive presence gets it backwards - and why trying to fix an internal self-trust problem with external signals like the right wardrobe, vocabulary, posture, or communication style will never create the authority you’re looking for. What a lack of executive presence actually looks like - from overpreparing and overexplaining to talking through silence, watering down your point of view, and interpreting every challenge as proof that you’re wrong. How to build real executive presence through self-trust - so you can say “I don’t know” without panicking, disagree with someone more senior without apologizing, stay grounded when challenged, and lead powerfully without becoming someone you’re not.Because executive presence isn’t about learning how to look certain. It’s about trusting yourself when you’re not. You don’t need to eliminate your personality, mute your enthusiasm, or become a generic version of what you think a senior leader is supposed to be. You need to develop the range to lead strategically without performing someone else’s version of leadership. Because confidence comes and goes. But when you trust yourself, you can feel nervous and still lead. You can feel uncertain and still make the recommendation. You can be challenged and still stay grounded. You can get something wrong and still trust that your perspective belongs in the room. That’s the real shift. You don’t develop executive presence by adding more polish. You develop it by removing the proving, performing, and second-guessing that’s getting in the way of the leader you already are. Next Level™ Leader Quiz: You’re smart. Capable. Proven. Leadership Shift #181 - The Power of Your No

You’re capable. Reliable. The person everyone knows they can count on. So when another meeting lands on your calendar… another project needs someone to step in… or another opportunity comes your way… You say yes. Because saying yes has worked. It’s helped you build a reputation. Earn trust. Create opportunities. Get promoted. But as you rise into senior leadership, there comes a point when saying yes to everything stops making you more valuable. It starts scattering your time, energy, and attention across things that don’t actually require you. And the leadership skill that becomes increasingly important? Learning to trust your no. In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I’m diving into: Why your no may actually be more powerful than your yes - and how saying no with discernment helps you protect your time, energy, and focus for the work that actually matters. Why saying no becomes part of your job as you rise into senior leadership - because your value is no longer measured by how much you can personally execute, but by your ability to think strategically, make decisions, develop people, and determine what deserves your attention. The three powerful no’s that make you a stronger leader: no to what isn’t yours to carry, no to opportunities you don’t actually want, and no to points of view you don’t agree with.Because your no isn’t about becoming less helpful, less ambitious, or less committed. It’s about becoming more discerning. More strategic. And more intentional about what gets access to you. Your yes spends your resources. Your no decides where they’re worth spending. And sometimes, your next level of leadership isn’t about what else you’re willing to take on. It’s about what you’re finally willing to put down. Next Level™ Leader Quiz: You’re smart. Capable. Leadership Shift #180 - 99% of the Time You Know Exactly What to Do

You know more than you think you do. Sometimes “I don’t know what to do” isn’t confusion - it’s discomfort with what you already know you need to do. The conversation, the boundary, the difficult feedback, the career move, or the decision that feels risky. In this episode, I'm diving in to discuss: Why 99% of the time you already know the right next step—and how fear, self-doubt, and the desire for certainty can convince you to ignore it.How high-performing women talk themselves out of what they know is right, then overthink, spin, and outsource their decisions to other people for validation. The leadership shift from asking “What should I do?” to “If I truly trusted myself, what would I do next?”—and how acting on that answer builds the self-trust required to rise and thrive in senior leadership.Next Level™ Leader Quiz: You’re smart. Leadership Shift #179: Taking the Break You Need Makes You a Better Senior Leader

When was the last time you gave yourself permission to truly step away from work? Not because you earned it. Not because you finally cleared your inbox. Simply because you knew you needed it. For many brilliant women in demanding corporate careers, rest feels unproductive. There's always another email to answer, another presentation to prepare, another problem to solve. So instead of slowing down, they keep pushing—believing the answer is to work harder. But what if the leadership breakthrough you're looking for isn't found by doing more? What if it's found by reconnecting with yourself? In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I share why rest isn't a luxury or a reward - it's one of the most strategic leadership decisions you can make. I also share lessons from my own quarterly reset while spending time in Los Angeles and why stepping away from work has consistently helped me make better decisions, reconnect with my vision, and become a stronger leader. In this episode, I'm diving in to discuss: Why exhaustion disconnects you from the leader you're trying to become — and how constantly prioritizing everyone else's needs over your own quietly erodes your clarity, confidence, and ability to lead with self-trust.The connection between rest and better leadership decisions — why the most effective response to a difficult conversation, career decision, or leadership challenge is often to step away first, reconnect with yourself, and return with greater clarity and conviction. How to build moments of rest into everyday leadership — including the simple shifts that help you recharge without waiting for the perfect vacation, so you can lead with more presence, authenticity, and strategic influence every day.If you've been telling yourself you'll rest after this project... If you've been running on empty while convincing yourself you just need to push a little harder... Or if you've forgotten what it feels like to lead from a place of clarity instead of exhaustion... This episode will remind you that your next level isn't created by sacrificing yourself. It's created by learning to trust yourself enough to pause. Next Level™ Leader Quiz: You’re smart. Capable. Leadership Shift #178 - How Overexplaining Quietly Undermines Your Authority

Have you ever walked out of a meeting knowing you had the right recommendation - but wishing you had stopped talking two minutes earlier? If you constantly feel the need to justify, soften, or defend your ideas before anyone has even challenged them, the issue isn't your communication. It's self-trust. In this week's episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I explore why overexplaining quietly undermines your authority - and the leadership shift that allows senior leaders to communicate with greater clarity, conviction, and influence. In this episode, I'm diving in to discuss: Why overexplaining isn't a communication problem - it's a self-trust problem. Discover how the habit of overexplaining stems from seeking validation rather than trusting your own judgment, and why that subtle difference changes how others experience your leadership. The leadership shift from proving your thinking to owning your judgment. Learn why the behaviors that helped you build credibility earlier in your career can begin costing you credibility as you step into senior leadership - and how executive leaders create clarity instead of convincing.A simple awareness practice to break the overexplaining habit. I share one powerful question to ask yourself whenever you notice you've already made your point but keep talking - helping you build deeper self-trust and stronger executive presence.Next Level™ Leader Quiz: You’re smart. Leadership Shift #177 : Stop Waiting Until You're Ready

How many opportunities have you postponed because you told yourself, "I'm just not ready yet"? For brilliant, high-performing women, waiting rarely looks like fear. It sounds responsible. "I need a little more experience." "Maybe next year." "I haven't earned it yet." But what if readiness isn't something you discover? What if it's something you create? In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I share some of the most pivotal decisions of my own career - from applying to Columbia Business School to leaving investment banking and starting my coaching business before I felt qualified. Along the way, I unpack why confidence isn't what creates action - and why the permission you've been waiting for has to come from you. In this episode, I'm diving in to discuss: Why waiting until you feel ready is one of the biggest hidden barriers to senior leadership - and how high-performing women often mistake fear for being "responsible," "strategic," or "not quite ready yet."The difference between waiting to become more qualified and choosing to believe you already belong - why self-trust, not certainty, is what allows exceptional women to step into bigger opportunities. How to stop waiting for confidence before you act - including the mindset shift that helps you trust yourself before you have proof, lead from identity instead of validation, and become the leader your next level requires. If you've been telling yourself you need one more year of experience... If you've been postponing the conversation, the promotion, or the opportunity because you don't feel completely ready... This episode will help you stop waiting for permission - and start trusting yourself enough to become the woman your next level is already asking you to be. Next Level™ Leader Quiz: You’re smart. Ep #176 - What If They Think You're Too Much?

What would you do differently if you stopped worrying about what other people thought? Would you finally ask for the promotion? Speak up in senior leadership meetings? Negotiate your salary? Set the boundary you've been avoiding? Or stop apologizing for taking up space? For so many brilliant, high-performing women in demanding corporate careers, the biggest thing standing between where they are and where they want to be isn't capability - it's the fear of other people's opinions. In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I unpack why the need for approval quietly keeps talented women playing smaller than they're meant to and the leadership shifts required to stop making career decisions based on potential disapproval - and start leading from self-trust instead. In this episode, I'm diving in to discuss: Why fear of other people's opinions is one of the biggest hidden barriers to senior leadership - and how constantly worrying about being 'too much,' 'too ambitious,' or 'too difficult' keeps brilliant women from asking for what they want, setting boundaries, and fully owning their leadership. The difference between building your career around approval versus alignment—why decisions made to avoid disapproval will always pull you further away from the career and leadership identity you actually want to create. How to stop editing yourself and start leading authentically—including the mindset shift that allows you to let people misunderstand you, trust your own desires, and become the leader you're truly meant to be.If you've been making career decisions based on what your manager, colleagues, or team might think… If you've been shrinking your ambitions, softening your voice, or holding yourself back to make other people more comfortable… This episode will help you stop seeking permission - and start becoming the leader you already know you're capable of being. Ep #175 - The Next Level Starts with Trusting Yourself to Want What You Want

What if the biggest thing standing between you and your next level isn't your capability... It's your willingness to trust yourself enough to want what you want. So many brilliant, high-performing women in demanding corporate careers believe they need more evidence before they're ready for senior leadership. More experience. More confidence. More certainty. More proof that they're capable of taking the next step. But that's not how leadership growth works. In this episode of Breaking Free From the Grind, I explore one of the most important leadership shifts you'll ever make: learning to trust yourself before you have all the evidence. Because the next level of your career doesn't begin when someone else believes you're ready. It begins when you decide to trust the desire that's already calling you forward. In this episode, you'll discover: Why so many brilliant, high-performing women in demanding corporate careers wait for permission before pursuing what they truly want. Why your desire doesn't need to be justified - and why it often comes before the evidence. How fear convinces you to stay where you are, while desire invites you to become the next-level version of yourself. Why waiting for certainty is one of the biggest reasons women stay stuck before senior leadership. The leadership shift from proving yourself to trusting yourself. How developing self-trust changes the way you lead, make decisions, and pursue bigger opportunities.Ready to discover what's keeping you from your next level?
