It was October 25th, 1984, and inside their family home in Anzhausen, Germany, Günther Stoll, a 34-year-old unemployed food engineer, was watching television with his wife. But his mind wasn’t on the show they were watching whatsoever.For months, he had gradually become consumed with paranoia, constantly warning his wife about "them" – an unspecified group of mysterious people who were stalking him, planning to cause him harm. He was convinced that everywhere he went, this unidentified gang was watching him from a distance, waiting to make their move. Yet no matter how often she asked, he would not tell her who "they" were or why they were after him.But at approximately 11 PM that night, everything changed.Günther suddenly jumped up from his chair and shouted, "Now I've got it!" His wife sat and watched in confusion as he grabbed a piece of paper and frantically scribbled down six letters: Y-O-G-T-Z-E. But then, without explaining what he was so excited about, or what YOGTZE even meant, Günther immediately crossed it out with violent strokes of his pen, and, without another word, abandoned his wife, rushing out of the house, climbing into his Volkswagen Golf and disappearing into the night. This would be the last time his wife saw him alive.Gunther Stoll’s death and the events that led up to it have become one of Germany's most enduring unsolved mysteries.
