The agents reportedly made more than 14,000 edits across thousands of pages, raising fresh concerns about what happens when autonomous AI systems discover unexpected ways to communicate and work around their restrictions. We also look at OpenAI’s new Astra model, its most powerful model yet for computer and browser use, coding and cybersecurity—while researchers question whether its increasingly opaque reasoning makes these systems harder to monitor. We also dive into the growing battle over AI surveillance and privacy. On the markets and crypto side, Bitcoin jumps more than 22% in a week as it increasingly trades like “amplified gold,” major U.S. banks including Goldman Sachs and Bank of America are planning a joint dollar-backed stablecoin and Strategy buys another 4,603 BTC for $369.7 million. NVIDIA agrees to acquire Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion, reinforcing its push into open-weight AI. Meanwhile, Canada loses roughly 42,000 jobs in August, U.S. markets fall as stronger employment data increases expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike, and global bond yields surge as investors worry about inflation, government debt and the enormous borrowing required to finance the AI infrastructure boom.

    This week’s episode explores the growing debate over how fast artificial intelligence should advance. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is warning that the AI revolution could become one of the most disruptive periods in human history, with risks ranging from mass unemployment and harm to children to the possibility of increasingly autonomous systems becoming difficult to control. Gates is calling for stronger limits and even suggests taxing AI and robots similarly to human labor. We also look at how AI is changing the relationship between people and traditional expertise. A new survey found that 53% of respondents now use AI to verify advice from professionals, while 46% say professional credentials carry less weight than they once did. This emerging “expertise recession” could help people ask better questions, but it also creates serious risks when chatbots provide confident but incorrect medical or professional advice. Meanwhile, South Korea is preparing to offer free generative AI services to its entire population, allowing citizens to use AI for tasks such as booking medical appointments, finding housing and handling taxes. This episode also examines some of the more surprising applications of AI and robotics. Surgeons in London successfully used AI during a delicate brain-tumor operation to identify nerves and blood vessels in real time, potentially helping prevent blindness or other catastrophic complications. On a much stranger front, researchers are developing cyborg cockroaches equipped with cameras and miniature medical injectors that could eventually deliver emergency medicine to people trapped inside collapsed buildings. We also cover growing concerns over Flock Safety’s AI-powered surveillance network, as more than 200 cities and counties have reportedly ended contracts amid concerns about privacy, data sharing and police misuse.
