When a Woman Shows Herself Kindness: The Canary Island Rule

When was the last time you were celebrated… not for pushing through, but for finally taking care of yourself? Not for doing more. Not for holding it all together. Not for being everything to everyone. Just for being kind to yourself. In the Canary Islands, there’s a tradition: when a woman shows herself a kindness, her sisters congratulate her. And something about that feels both beautiful… and a little unfamiliar. In this episode, we step into a powerful moment from Canary Island Song by Robin Jones Gunn and unpack why it stops so many women in their tracks. Together, we’ll explore what Scripture actually says about caring for yourself, how God designed your brain to respond to kindness, and why so many of us feel guilt in the very moments we need grace the most. Because maybe self-kindness isn’t selfish. Maybe it’s stewardship. Maybe it’s wisdom. Maybe it’s long overdue. And maybe it’s time to stop quietly expecting yourself to burn out… and start honoring the moments you choose to care. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a simple practice to try this week — one that just might help you walk away thinking: I feel so lovely. Women Worth Knowing: Five Women Who Trusted God When It Was Hard

Some stories deserve to be told again and again. In this episode of Called & Curious, we step into the lives of five remarkable women who trusted God when life was difficult, uncertain, and even heartbreaking. Their stories span generations and continents—from World War II Europe to the mountains of China to the Amazon rainforest. These women weren’t fearless. They weren’t perfect. But they trusted God with the next step. In this episode, you’ll hear the powerful stories of: Corrie ten Boom – who hid Jewish families during the Holocaust and later preached forgiveness around the worldGladys Aylward – a housemaid who followed God’s call to China and led more than 100 children to safety during wartimeElisabeth Elliot – who returned to the tribe that killed her husband and shared the gospel with themRobin Jones Gunn – whose stories helped shape the faith journeys of generations of young womenJackie Hill Perry – whose life was transformed through an encounter with ScriptureThese women remind us that courage rarely begins with a dramatic moment. More often, it begins with a quiet yes. If you’ve ever wondered what trusting God looks like in real life—especially when circumstances are hard—these stories will encourage you. Because courageous faith isn’t reserved for extraordinary people. It grows when ordinary people trust God one step at a time. In This Episode You'll Learn What trusting God looked like in the lives of five influential Christian womenHow faith grows through grief, uncertainty, and callingWhy storytelling is one of the most powerful ways we strengthen our faithWhat it might look like to trust God in your own life todayShare This Episode If this episode encouraged you, consider sharing it with a friend, a sister, or even listening to it with your daughter. Stories like these remind us that we’re part of a much bigger story of faith. Awkward Celebration Time! (Your Brain Needs This)

Have you ever finished something hard… and then immediately moved on? No pause. No celebration. No “that mattered.” If you’ve ever felt like you’re growing but still somehow behind, this episode is for you. In today’s conversation, we’re talking about why celebration can feel awkward — and why your brain actually needs it. Because here’s the truth: Your mind is wired with a negativity bias. You’ll naturally replay what went wrong. You’ll rehearse what you wish you’d said differently. You’ll remember the birthday party you showed up to on the wrong day. (Yes… we’re going there. 😅) But positive moments? They fade in about 10–20 seconds unless you intentionally extend them. Which means if you don’t slow down and mark the win, your nervous system quietly files your growth under “normal Tuesday.” In this episode, you’ll learn: Why positive emotions fade so quickly (and what to do about it)How negativity bias affects your confidence and motivationWhat the Bible says about stacking “stones of remembrance” (hello, Joshua 4 👋)Why high-achievers often struggle to celebrateA simple 3-minute celebration reset you can practice this weekWe’re not talking about confetti cannons or forced positivity. We’re talking about the awkward, grounding, hand-over-heart kind of celebration. The kind that builds resilience. The kind that rewires your brain. The kind that reminds you who you’re becoming. So this week? Stack one stone a day. Pause. Take a breath. And say, “That mattered.” Because it did. Thanks for being here to celebrate episode 100 together... it means the world to me! Does Jesus Think Your Faith Is Boring?

What if the most dangerous thing about your faith isn’t doubt… but familiarity? In this episode of the Called & Curious Podcast, we wrestle with a question that’s uncomfortable, funny, and deeply biblical: What if Jesus thinks your faith is boring? Scripture tells us Jesus was amazed only twice—once by faith, and once by unbelief. That means belief is never neutral. Hesitation isn’t harmless. And the way we respond to God’s invitations, his callings, is shaping who we are becoming. We want the kind of faith where that obedience looks foolish on the outside. "Foolish" faith amazes God.  Through honest, foolish stories (awkward social media posts, starting a podcast with zero confidence, mermaid detours 😅), biblical examples (Esther, Mary, Moses, Jesus), and a little neuroscience, this episode is a wake-up call. Not a guilt trip. Not a hustle message. A reckoning. If you’ve ever felt called… but stalled, this episode is for you. We'll chat about why your calling is so important, how it's given just to you, and how sometimes we get nervous about that new *awkward, hard, foolish* thing in front of us, that we don't answer our call.  Let's amaze Jesus by our belief and step into our God-given callings with courage!  Also, Christine Caine, if you're listening, um—WOW! Lol And also, that mention of you in the episode was made with the highest respect. I'm amazed by the work you do and the grace, humor, and power with which you deliver messages of Jesus. ✨ Next week: we’ll get very practical and talk dopamine, motivation, and how your brain might be discipling you more than you realize.  (Understanding this discipling offers a critical level of awareness that will help us navigate this time of political division as a Christian so we can lead conversations with grace, knowledge, and love.) And don't forget to: 📖 Join the Book Launch (aka my brave, awkward ask) If this episode resonated, I’d love your help as my book Love Moves releases into the wild.
