    Atomic Blonde (2017)

    Atomic Blonde (2017)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

In this installment of Catching Up On Cinema's “Ladies' Night” event month, Kyle and Trevor review David Leitch's, Atomic Blonde (2017)!

Starring Charlize Theron as the titular Atomic Blonde, the film is a slick and stylish spy thriller set in East/West Berlin during the turbulent final days of the Soviet Union.

The solo directorial debut of David Leitch (who co-directed John Wick), the film is a strong initial offering that would pave the way for it's director to immediately take the reins of blockbuster films in the years to come.

With a supporting cast consisting of the likes of James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, John Goodman, Eddie Marsan, and Toby Jones, the film is never dull and is surprisingly generous to it's performers and dialogue despite the action heavy pedigree of it's production crew.

While Charlize Theron is a truly spectacular in the film, both as an actress and action performer, perhaps the greatest compliment to the production must be given to Sam Hargrave and all of the folks at 87Eleven Action Design, who would serve to conceive, construct and perform one of the most memorable action set pieces in recent cinema history:

    The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

    The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

In this installment of Catching Up On Cinema's “Ladies' Night” event month, Kyle and Trevor review Renny Harlin's, The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)!
Starring Geena Davis in a rare action heavy role, the film concerns an amnesiac lady spy recovering her lost memories and wrapping up loose ends.

Directed by Renny Harlin (former husband to our leading lady), written by Shane Black, and costarring the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Brian Cox, the film has all of the components of a 90's action classic, but ends up falling short of the sum of it's parts.

Filled with Shane Black-isms and creative, explosive stunt work and pyrotechnics, the film is a fine action film, but unfortunately not the star making feature that it's director and star had hoped it would be.

    Yes, Madam! (1985)

    Yes, Madam! (1985)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This week, “Ladies' Night” continues at Catching Up On Cinema as Kyle and Trevor sit down to review Corey Yuen's Yes, Madam! (1985).

Produced by Sammo Hung, the film serves as an early showcase for the martial arts capabilities of it's dual leading ladies', Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock.

Though the women carry the bulk of the action spectacle, the majority of the film's runtime is actually devoted to Tsui Hark, John Shum and Mang Hoi's farcical escapades as a trio of immoral grifters that get in over their heads.

Colorful, and unapologetically silly, the film is an outstanding, if grossly uneven example of 80's Hong Kong cinema.

    Foxy Brown (1974)

    Foxy Brown (1974)

    linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema

This July is “Ladie's Night” at Catching Up On Cinema!
This month we'll be taking a look at a number of action movies headlined by women, beginning with Jack Hill's, Foxy Brown (1974)!

Starring Pam Grier, the film is one of the most famous of Blaxploitation films, serving as the launchpad for both the actress and character's ascent to legendary pop culture icon status.

Mean spirited, funky, and packed with social commentary, the film is very much an exploitation film, however it holds the distinction of serving as a highly influential movie to the likes of Quentin Tarantino and many other high profile members of the film community.
