When I was a youth pastor, I once watched a student throw all his “secular” music into a river. I remember feeling conflicted about it. Did following Jesus really mean the replacement of everything he had previously loved? Is that how Christians are meant to relate to culture?
This session offers an alternative, non-anxious approach to cultural engagement, one that is attentive to the hunger for meaning, beauty, and justice, and governed by gospel virtues of faith, love, and hope.

Our lives are mediated by technology—jobs, relationships, and spiritual lives can all be conducted via screen. And it's hard to imagine life any other way. Try as we might, few of us will be going back to the 19th century any time soon...nor might we want to.
But for all its benefits, tech can easily take over; its promises of an easy life can take away our abilities to attend, consider, and love. And in a world of algorithms that target our subconscious, it's ever harder to make conscious choices towards virtue.
With help from sources both new and ancient, we'll consider what it means to be human in a world of devices—and simple, practical actions for a tech-wise life.

All people are created in God's image and no life is beyond God's reach. Through Jesus' trial, execution, and resurrection, we have all been offered hope and a new purpose for life. This amazing awakening of hope and life purpose allows those who once broke the law to be transformed, replacing the cycle of crime with a cycle of renewal. Prisoners often face many injustices before, during, and after incarceration. As Christians, we must learn how to respond and take a stand for justice that restores.

Social work is hard. Social workers need to be equipped with tools to go into a field filled with trauma, hurt, and oppressive systems.
Jesus didn't come to encourage people to take bubble baths in an effort of self-care. He came so that we would "not be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind."
During this workshop, dissect the lies that are often fed to helpers, and take a dive into several scripture verses that can help us think about social work in a way that sets us up for success.
