Episode 31: Sarah Brown, Director of Community and Veterans Service

🎙️ Chambers, Changes & Conversations – Community & Veterans Services In this episode of Chambers, Changes & Conversations, we take a closer look at the services that support some of the most vulnerable — and resilient — members of our community. From helping veterans access the benefits they’ve earned, to supporting families in crisis, caring for animals in need, and creating pathways to housing and recovery, Manatee County’s Community & Veterans Services Department plays a vital role in strengthening the fabric of our community. We begin with Veteran Services and the work being done to help former service members navigate the often complicated VA benefits system. Our conversation also highlights Manatee Moves, a program that has already provided more than 1,000 free rides to local veterans, helping them reach medical appointments, services, and support they may otherwise struggle to access. We then turn to affordable housing and community development, discussing how partnerships with nonprofit and public organizations are helping address one of the most pressing challenges facing our growing county. We also explore the purpose behind Under One Roof Gateway South, a facility designed to support women experiencing homelessness, addiction, and trauma through recovery-focused services. Animal welfare is another key focus, including the progress toward the new Bishop Animal Care and Adoption Center. We discuss how the project fits into the County’s broader goals for public service, how care standards are maintained for animals in our facilities, and how community input helps shape policies and priorities. The conversation also highlights the work of Human Services — supporting children, families, seniors, and caregivers — and how those programs help residents during some of life’s most difficult moments. As our population grows and ages, the need for compassionate, accessible support continues to expand. Finally, we talk about the County’s probation program and how it focuses not only on accountability but also on rehabilitation, connecting individuals with resources that help them avoid returning to the justice system. From veterans and families to seniors, animals, and individuals working toward a second chance, this episode shines a light on the many ways Community & Veterans Services is helping Manatee County residents build stability, opportunity, and hope. 🎧 Listen now to learn more about the programs and people working every day to support our community.

Episode 30: Molly White, Director of Sports & Leisure

🎙️ Chambers, Changes & Conversations – Sports, Leisure & Community Life Parks, libraries, fields, pools — they may feel like everyday amenities, but in a growing county like Manatee, they are essential infrastructure for connection, wellness, and quality of life. In this episode of Chambers, Changes & Conversations, we sit down with the leadership behind Manatee County’s Sports & Leisure Department to talk about how these spaces serve far more than recreation — they serve people. We explore why parks and libraries aren’t just “nice-to-haves,” but critical public services that support physical health, mental wellness, lifelong learning, and community connection. From youth sports leagues to quiet library corners, these spaces shape daily life in ways residents may not always see. We spotlight some of the County’s most impactful projects, including the legacy of G.T. Bray Park, the renovations and pool expansion at John Marble Park, and the unique design and purpose behind Hidden Harbor Park. We also look ahead to the future Athletics and Aquatics Center at Premier Sports Campus and what that investment means for residents and regional sports tourism alike. And of course, we talk about one of the most exciting recent milestones — the County’s purchase of Mixon Fruit Farms — and how Sports & Leisure will help shape its next chapter as a community-focused destination. Beyond the projects, this episode is about partnerships — with youth and adult leagues, families, athletes, and readers — and how those relationships maximize every field, facility, and library branch for the people of Manatee County. It’s a conversation about growth, momentum, and why the places we gather matter more than ever. 🎧 Listen now and discover how Sports & Leisure helps build community — one park, one program, and one pickup game at a time.

  5. Ep 26: Nicole Knapp, Director of Development Services

    JAN 20

Ep 26: Nicole Knapp, Director of Development Services

What actually happens after someone says, “I want to build something”? We talk with Nicole Knapp, Director of Development Services, for a candid and surprisingly fun conversation about how development really works in Manatee County. Nicole shares her path into this industry and pulls back the curtain on the divisions she oversees: building, planning, zoning, permitting, and impact fees to name a few. If you have ever been confused, frustrated, or curious about the development process, this episode is for you. We talk about her team and the reality of their workload, including a nearly 10x increase in cases following three hurricanes in late 2024. It is a behind-the-scenes look at public servants navigating growth, recovery, and complexity at the same time. Nicole walks us through the full development journey, from pre-application to application, to planning commission, and explains why only about 4 percent of cases ever make it to the Board of County Commissioners. Along the way, she explains common misconceptions, why the process exists, and what factors are key to consider before a public hearing. We also dig into bigger ideas: why “smart growth” is an overused phrase, why an updated Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code matter, and what her staff is doing to support this top priority of the Board's in 2026. Clear, honest, and full of insight, this is a must-listen episode for anyone who wants to better understand how development decisions are made and why the process looks the way it does.
