Championing a Rare Disease, Heartbreak & Loss, and Mental Health with Sydney Weadock

Sydney Weadock is 24 years old, living in the Columbus, OH area. She’s an elementary school teacher and loves going to work every day. She loves watching the world through her students’ eyes. She graduated in 2019 from Belmont University in Nashville, TN with a double major in communication studies and elementary education. Sydney’s life has been a rollercoaster of physical and mental trials and tributes. She recently learned that before she could love anyone else, she had to learn to love herself first. Sydney and I were roommates my sophomore year at Belmont University and we went through so much together just in that one year. We both were diagnosed with rare diseases the same year. She was with me through one of my lowest points and I am so grateful God placed her in my life when he did. When I asked Sydney if she wanted to come on the show to share her trials with her mental and physical health, as well as dealing with loss in the family, she was so open to being vulnerable. She even shares a tragic but life changing moment that happened for her as a teenager for the first time. I am so blessed we still have Sydney here today but I do want to give a trigger warning that we do discuss suicidal ideations and attempts in this episode. But I think it is important that we can be transparent about our lowest points and how we are working to overcome them. What you think you may know about someone is almost always on the surface, and there are so many people out there who are waking up to fight their own inner demons and battles. If that is you, you are not alone. I know Sydney is going to leave you feeling inspired and uplifted. Championing Fitness: Becoming Physically and Mentally Stronger with Gaby Owens

Gaby Owens is our first guest on the show! She has spent most of her life as an athlete, leading to her love for fitness. She is a wife, mother of two, a physique competitor, cheer coach, and personal trainer. She has been involved with cheerleading for 19 years as both a cheerleader and a coach. During her time in cheering in college at Western Michigan University, she fell in love with weight training. She saw how weight and resistance training could change, not only how you feel and look, but also how you perform in athletics. After graduating from WMU, she and her husband moved to Decatur, IL she began seriously looking into competing in physique shows. Since cheerleading was done, she felt like this was her next athletic endeavor. Her first show was in 2008 and she won the Novice class in Women’s Bodybuilding and took 2nd in the Open Women’s Bodybuilding class. She was hooked! With competing in physique shows, she has learned a great deal about science and the role nutrition plays in fat loss and muscle gain. She has always enjoyed seeing people succeed which is why she has a passion for coaching her athletes and training her clients. Whatever their goal is, she is there to guide, encourage, and motivate them to be the bed they can be. She loves being the cheerleader along their journey of improvement. Aside from her passion for fitness, she enjoys spending quality time with her family, summer days, the pool, and hiking.
