The Plague of the 21st Century

COVID-19 is not the only pandemic sweeping the world. The pandemic of loneliness has infected many, especially in Western society. First-world countries such as the United States are particularly affected by loneliness and isolation due to the emphasis on individualism and the nation's historical roots of setting forth on one's own to "strike your fortune". Also, social media and comparison culture can contribute to anxiety and feelings of hopelessness and isolation. Although the mentality of relying on only oneself to "make it" in society has boosted the U.S. economy to one of the world's richest countries in the world, it has taken a toll on the mental health and social/family life of Americans. Not to mention, the collective work/life balance in the U.S. is practically nonexistent due to the philosophy of living to work, not working to live.
