Changing Suits

Taj & Bal

Members of the South Asian Community often go through similar experiences, but don’t discuss problems outside of family out of concern for ‘what the community will say’. Over time, this has led to taboo topics, isolation, oppression, and inequality. And enough is enough. Hosted by second generation British South Asian sisters Taj and Bal, the Changing Suits podcast helps members of the South Asian Community across generation, gender, and geography develop a common understanding and awareness of issues affecting the community, so that the community can thrive. The podcast also gives people outside of the community an opportunity to deepen their understanding of South Asian culture and values so they can help build services, companies, and a society that are better and more inclusive. Tune in each week for a closer look at modern South Asian life with a dose of tradition. Follow the show on social media @changing_suits

Breaking the Silence on Honour & Abuse | Changing Suits Podcast ft. Southall Black Sisters

In this powerful episode of the Changing Suits Podcast, we’re joined by Southall Black Sisters, a pioneering organisation that has spent decades supporting Black and minoritised women experiencing domestic abuse, violence, and systemic injustice. Together, we have an honest conversation about honour-based violence, domestic abuse, and the cultural stigma that often silences survivors. We also explore the complex challenges faced by migrant women who may be too afraid to report abuse due to fears that authorities could share their information with immigration enforcement, putting them at risk of detention or deportation. Southall Black Sisters are campaigning for a “firewall” between the police and immigration authorities to ensure that survivors can seek protection without fear.  This episode sheds light on why many cases go unreported and why systemic change is needed to protect vulnerable women. In this episode we discuss:  Honour-based abuse and honour killings Domestic violence in minoritised communities Cultural stigma and barriers to reporting abuse The fear migrant women face when contacting authorities The campaign for a data “firewall” to protect survivorsThis is one of our most important conversations yet, raising awareness about issues that too often remain hidden. #ChangingSuitsPodcast #SouthallBlackSisters #HonourBasedViolence #DomesticAbuseAwareness #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #MigrantWomen #BreakingTheSilence #DomesticViolenceAwareness #ImmigrantRights #AdvocacyForWomen #CommunityVoices #SocialJustice

Cancel Culture, Online Backlash & the South Asian Divorce Debate | Changing Suits Podcast

In this episode we discuss cancel culture, online backlash, and the viral divorce debate that sparked controversy online in the South Asian community. We explore how social media outrage can quickly lead to someone being “cancelled” for sharing an opinion online. This conversation was sparked by a snippet from one of our previous podcast episodes where we discussed the idea that divorce has become “fashionable.”  The clip generated strong reactions online and ignited a heated debate across our social media channels. Some people agreed, others strongly disagreed - and it raised a bigger question for us: Can we still have honest conversations online without being judged or cancelled? We explore how social media can amplify opinions, take comments out of context, and create a culture where public perception can quickly turn against you. At the same time, we discuss what freedom looks like and how people online can "control" the narrative of certain topics.  This podcast aims to open the door to honest, respectful discussions around the topics many people think about but rarely talk about openly. In this episode we discuss: • Cancel culture and online backlash • How social media can escalate debates • The response to our divorce discussion clip • Why certain topics remain taboo in South Asian communities • The pressure of public opinion in the digital age • Whether difficult conversations should be avoided or addressed Whether you agreed, disagreed, or were somewhere in the middle, this episode is about creating space for conversation rather than shutting it down. If you enjoy honest discussions around culture, relationships, and modern social issues in the South Asian community, be sure to follow the podcast and share your thoughts.
