15 episodes

“Chillingworth” recounts the lurid saga of the men behind the most notorious crime in Florida’s history: the grisly 1955 murder of a brilliant judge revered as an icon of integrity. Each of the three killers was horrifying enough on his own, but once they crossed racial lines to form an integrated criminal alliance, the state would never be the same. Their viciousness shook the faith Floridians had in their criminal justice system, the only institution they could trust to keep them safe. The ten-episode podcast uncovers mesmerizing surveillance audio tapes that broke the case open, unheard in over half a century. “Chillingworth” is the first story in the captivating series, "Worst of Men".

Highly recommended. Great story for a video series.

With the time provided by a trans-Pacific flight, I finally had the opportunity to catch up (and re-listen) to the final episodes of this remarkable podcast.

Wow. What a story.

And what a doggedly well-researched and well-constructed narrative. The production was top-notch, too. This is a highly engaging work. I recall hearing about the Chillingworth story as a child growing up in South Florida, but clearly missed out on the breadth of the related stories, and their conclusion. It was a story that needed to be told and owed the time, effort and clear passion of the authors.

But one doesn’t need that background as a South Floridian to be swept up by this engrossing tale.

Well done. I’d look forward to seeing this as a video series, which would help address some of the limitations of the audio-only version (e.g. the tape recordings would benefit from sub-titles, and the multitude of characters would be easier to recall by image).

Had a lot of potential

The content and sequencing is haunting and riveting. However, the podcast is plagued by poor narration and gratuitous use of sound effects. The climax is lost due to reliance on unintelligible audio.
