    Simon Katterl: Improving the Mental Health system & the conversations we have around it

    Chronically Chilled speaks with Mental Health advocate Simon Katterl to discuss his work in improving the Mental Health system, an update on the Royal Commision and how we can have better public conversations about Mental Health. Simon Katterl is a lived experience workforce member who has worked in community development, advocacy, regulation, and law reform. Simon’s work is grounded in his lived experience of mental health issues, as well as his studies in law, politics, psychology and regulation. Simon previously worked for the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, the Mental Health Complaints Commissioner, Victoria Legal Aid, RMIT University, Griffith University and the University of Melbourne. He now provides consultancy to several agencies, including the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.     Graeme Innes: Discrimination by the Airline Industry

    Australia's (and the world’s!) airline industries have frequently sought & received exemptions from the Disability Discrimination Act, often under the broad veil of 'air safety'. Once again, people with disabilities are the exception to the rule and their are negative consequences as a result. Freedom of travel is a human right. Chronically Chilled catches up with human rights advocate and former Disability Discrimination Commissioner of 9 years, Graeme Innes to discuss his experiences with the industry, current advocacy efforts, and what the public can do to support. This after one of our co-hosts, Akii Ngo, experienced an extremely traumatic event days after Grame’s airport discrimination, coincidentally at the same airport.

Content note: this episode mentions #Robodebt and the devastating impact that scheme had on the community and mentions of suicide. Elly Desmarchelier (she/her) is a proud, queer, disabled woman living with cerebral palsy. She is passionate disability advocate, writer, disability rights campaigner and national spokesperson for the Every Australian Counts Defend Our NDIS campaign. Elly is always up for chatting or writing about issues impacting disabled women/people -  from the NDIS, COVID vaccinations, economic participation, to whatever is happening in the wild world of politics on any given day. Her favourite part of advocacy work is supporting and working alongside other women and people with disability, because no matter their age, job, or type of disability, every one of them is a leader in their own way.     Leah Filley: Chronic Pain & Gender Intersections

    Akii Ngo sits down to have a frank, open discussion about chronic pain and it’s gender interactions with Leah Filley - actor, advocate, writer and producer who’s lived with chronic pelvic pain for over 20 years . Akii (they/them) and Leah (she/her) share their similar experiences of being brushed off while suffering in silence. They discuss everything from medical sexism and bias to the  continued challenges of finding (or not finding) a diagnosis, and the upcoming documentary Leah and associate news editor and journalist, Gabrielle Jackson, author of Pain & Prejudice are working on to highlight the ongoing challenges that women and those of marginalised genders face when it comes to our own bodies.

    We are back and with a new team!  Akii Ngo and Bridget McArthur join Marijo Pozega to make up the new Chronically Chilled team in 2022 and beyond!They  provide a follow up on the 3CR Disability Day special that focused on the plight of asylum seekers at the Park Hotel and they discuss the let it rip politics of the pandemic and what that means for chronically ill and disabled folks.
