    CIRIS Round Table Podcast - Protest in Serbia

    In this CIRIS Roundtable podcast, our panel discusses the protest in Serbia. On this episode's panel: - ⁠⁠Sergei Oudman⁠⁠, CIRIS, President/Co-founder (co-host) - ⁠⁠Dominique Batiste⁠⁠, CIRIS Journal Director (co-host) In Novi Sad, Serbia, the collapse killed 15 people and exposed deep-rooted issues of governmental negligence, corruption, and lack of transparency, particularly concerning Serbia’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects. Demonstrations quickly spread across the country, with students, lawyers, construction workers, teachers, and farmers demanding accountability.     The terrorist attack by Hamaz on Israel

    In this episode we delve into the possible consequences of the terrorist attach by Hamaz on Israel on October the 7th 2023. More then 1500 people were killed in the so called “Al-Aqsa Storm” by Hamaz and Israel is currently on the crossroad on how to proceed. Hamaz could not have executed a military operation like this without outside assistance and the geopolitical playing field seems to be under pressure as conflicts are being fueled in the region.     Iyad el-Baghdadi is an internationally recognized Arab Spring activist and an expert on the topic of Islam & liberty. A former career entrepreneur and startup consultant, he rose to prominence in the aftermath of the Arab revolutions of 2011 before being summarily arrested and forcibly exiled from his home in the UAE in April 2014. Today he is recognized among the most influential and prominent Arab voices online. He lives in Oslo, Norway, where he has been granted political asylum and writes regularly for both Norwegian and international media, and his Twitter account received over 180 million views last year. Iyad is the founder of Kawaakibi Foundation, an accelerator for thinkers and doers with a focus on the future of liberty in Muslim communities and in the Arab world. He is also the founder and editor-in-chief of the Arab Tyrant Manual, a platform for the study of authoritarian behavior and tactics. Iyad is a fellow at Norwegian liberal think tank Civita and a board member at Munathara, the Arab debate NGO.     CIRIS Podcast; Guest: Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Leader of the Parti Québécois

    The Quebec independence movement has been part of the Canadian political landscape since the 1960s, notably with the founding of the Parti Québécois (PQ). The movement was particularly strong from the 1970s to the 1990s, with the holding of two referendums on Quebec independence under PQ governments. While sovereigntists were defeated on both occasions, the results of the 1995 referendum were particularly tight with 49.42% of Quebec voters who voted in favor of separation from Canada. Since then, however, the movement has been on the decline. In 2018, the PQ obtained only  17% of the popular vote and won 10 seats out of 125 in the Quebec National Assembly.  Polls across the province over the past two decades have shown voters are moving away  from this issue, especially among young people. Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, PQ leader since October 2020, hopes to turn the tide. The 44- years-old leader intends to revitalize the Quebec independence movement in the years to come.  In this podcast episode, we discuss the topics of Quebec independence and the 2021  Canadian federal election.
