Joshua Spellman

Citegeist explores the paranormal through an archival lens. Each episode begins with a ghost story as it’s typically told, and then we dive into the archive for a ghoulish gossip sesh, examining historical and archival resources to learn what really happened.  You'll find that oftentimes, the real history is stranger, and scarier, than ghosts. Emily's Bridge & Boots Berry: The Ghosts of Stowe, Vermont

Stowe, Vermont has more than New England charm and renowned ski slopes...it is also full of ghosts. Most famously, Stowe boasts the haunted Emily's Bridge (Gold Brook Bridge) and a tap-dancing spirit said to haunt the Green Mountain Inn. This episode follows both tales through oral tradition, local history, and the frustrating reality of trying to pull out the truth from the legend. This episode's investigation digs into the many versions of Emily’s Bridge, why the story feels more like a template for local legend than a historical account, and how a rumor can harden into “fact” once it gets repeated on tours, in books, and online. It also follows the paper trail for Boots Berry, a supposedly heroic, tap-dancing inn worker whose biography turns out to be far harder to verify than the legend would like you to believe. Along the way, the episode highlights what historical research actually looks like; from dead links, mismatched citations, false leads, and the reality that sometimes...the information just isn't there. It’s a reminder that some ghost stories are be built from nothing but spooky vibes, loose retellings, and a sprinkling of just enough details to make it feel legitimate. Winderbourne Mansion: Unwinding its Tangled History

A haunted mansion. A tragic history. An an official government document that seems to confirm it all...except...its wrong. The Winderbourne Mansion in Boyds, Maryland has long been surrounded by stories of death, misfortune, and ghosts, but what happens when you peer into the archive? In this episode, we revisit a case I first covered in 2021 and attempt to untangle the twisted threads of a widely accepted, albeit incorrect, narrative. Children who were said to have died… didn’t, a supposed victim may never have even existed...and the foundation of the entire story traces back to a single government document that made one fatal flaw. Through census records, newspaper archives, death certificates, and historical context, this episode examines how misinformation can spread and ultimately become accepted as truth, even in respected national publications.https://citegeistpod.com/ Have a ghost story you want to share? The Spirit of Katie King: Spiritualism, Séances, and Scandal

During the height of the Spiritualist movement, a spirit named Katie King appeared in darkened séance rooms across America and England. She was like nothing the world had ever seen. She materialized before witnesses, speaking, walking, and even allowing herself to be touched. Scientists, journalists, and believers alike insisted she was proof of life after death. Katie King claimed to be the daughter of the infamous pirate Henry Morgan, returning from the afterlife as a "spirit control" to show the world that death was not the end. But as the séances grew more elaborate, and the manifestations more physical, suspicion began to rise. Join us today for a story of dimly lit cabinets, public demonstrations, whispered accusations, and a series of dramatic exposures that shook the foundation of Spiritualism itself, leading to its downfall. https://citegeistpod.com/ Have a ghost story you want to share? The Ghost of Anna Wheeler & the Trial of Mildred Brewster

Anna Wheeler's ghost haunts College Hall at the Vermont College of Fine Arts...at least that’s what campus lore says. In this episode of Citegeist, we investigate the ghost of Anna Wheeler and the strange happenings reported in the building’s tower. But the real history is something far juicier than what the college's oral history would lead you to believe. In fact, Anna likely never even step foot in the building. The true tale involves an 1890s love triangle between Annie Wheeler, Jack Wheeler, and Mildred Brewster but with a bit of a twist. Through archival research and historical records, we uncover how a real crime became a campus ghost story...and why, once again, truth is stranger than the legend. https://citegeistpod.com/ Have a ghost story you want to share? Pluckley, Kent: Britain's Most Haunted? Or Most Hyped?

Pluckley, Kent, has long claimed the title of “most haunted village in Britain,” even earning a spot in the 1989 Guinness Book of World Records. With at least a dozen named ghosts, including the Red Lady of St. Nicholas Church, the White Lady, the Watercress Woman, the highwayman...the list goes on... it’s become a pilgrimage for paranormal enthusiasts. In this episode of Citegeist, we begin with the legends as they’re typically told, taking a walking tour through Pluckley’s countless hauntings and then turn to archival research to examine historic newspapers, guidebooks, and scholarly research to trace how the village’s list of ghosts exploded over time. https://citegeistpod.com/ Have a ghost story you want to share? Ocean-Born Mary & the Pirate’s Curse: Digging Up the Truth

Ocean-Born Mary is one of New England’s most enduring ghost stories and folk tales about a child born at sea, pirates, and long lost pirate's treasure. In this episode of Citegeist, we trace the legend back to its earliest sources and follow how a real, historical figure named Mary Wallace was transformed into a paranormal celebrity tied to buried riches, the awakening of Lorraine Warren's psychic powers, and pirates...all at a place she (and pirates) never even lived. Like most episodes, we meet a cast of characters (namely Flora and Gussie Roy) that are more interesting than the ghost stories themselves... https://citegeistpod.com/ Have a ghost story you want to share? The Princess & the Plantation: Anna Madgigine Jai and the Ghosts of Kingsley Plantation

Kingsley Plantation is often remembered for its hauntings, but the person most often reduced to legend is the woman who ran it. In this episode, we learn about Anna Kingsley (born Anta Madjiguène Ndiaye, also known as Anna Kingsley, Anta Majigeen Njaay or Anna Madgigine Jai,): a West African princess who was enslaved as a child and later became a plantation matriarch, landowner, and one of the most powerful free Black women in Florida before the Civil War. By tracing Anta’s life alongside the ghost stories tied to Kingsley Plantation in Jacksonville, Florida, this episode explores how history, race, and folklore become entangled...and how racial attitudes determine what stories are preserved and what shape they take. https://citegeistpod.com/ Have a ghost story you want to share?
