Ms. Smith is an HBCU advocate and got her undergrad degree from The Kentucky State University (Mighty Thorobreds) in Frankfort, KY; Also received her master's degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She started as a substitute teacher in her journey in Augusta, Georgia. Smith then transition from K-12 as a Health/Physical Education Teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina to Higher Ed for over a decade and worked with students (especially athletes).
