WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING? Your Words Build Something With Nic Carothers

WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING? Your Words Build Something | Coaching Minutiae Podcast Every time we speak to an athlete, we are building something. The question is: WHAT? Confidence or insecurity?  Courage or fear?  Trust or shame?  Connection or isolation?  Character or resentment? In this solo episode of the Coaching Minutiae Podcast, Coach Nic Carothers challenges coaches, parents, mentors, and athletic leaders to examine one of the most powerful tools God has entrusted to us: Our words. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that “The tongue can bring death or life…” and Ephesians 4:29 challenges believers to use their words in ways that are good, helpful, and encouraging to the people who hear them. Those Scriptures have enormous implications for the way we lead young people. In a generation where student-athletes are navigating pressure, comparison, performance anxiety, lack of confidence, identity struggles, stress, and serious mental-health challenges, we have to recognize that the voice of a coach or parent can become part of the voice an athlete eventually hears inside her own head. That doesn’t mean we stop coaching hard. It doesn’t mean we eliminate accountability. And it certainly doesn’t mean telling athletes only what they want to hear. It means learning how to tell the truth without destroying the person receiving it. In this episode, we explore the biblical context surrounding Proverbs 18:21 and Ephesians 4:29 and examine powerful examples throughout Scripture showing what can happen when leaders choose words that either build people or tear them down. We examine: Rehoboam — when harsh leadership helped divide a kingdom.Abigail — when wise words interrupted a destructive decision. The Twelve Spies — when words shaped the beliefs of an entire community.Barnabas — when someone used his voice to help another person move beyond his past.Jesus — the model of speaking truth without stripping someone of dignity. And then we bring those lessons directly into today’s gym, locker room, home, classroom, and athletic program. Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing: Coach Stacy Mitchell on Faith, Family & the Future of Basketball

In this powerful return to Coaching Minutiae, Coach Stacy Mitchell joins Nic Carothers for an honest conversation about what really matters in coaching, leadership, and life. From gratitude and faith to the changing culture of basketball, Coach Mitchell shares why coaches must keep their priorities in order and never lose sight of their purpose. Together, Nic and Stacy discuss the realities of recruiting, the transfer portal, social media, youth development, and the responsibility coaches and parents have to prepare young people for life beyond the game. This episode dives into: 🏀 The difference between playing basketball and being a basketball player 🏀 Why fundamentals, teamwork, and defense still matter 🏀 How recruiting has changed in the NIL and transfer portal era 🏀 The importance of character, sportsmanship, and playing hard 🏀 Why great teams embrace “our shot” instead of “my shot” 🏀 Using basketball as a vehicle for growth instead of making it your identity 🏀 The lessons coaches hope their players carry long after the final buzzer 🏀 Why the greatest victories in coaching often happen years after players graduate Most importantly, Coach Mitchell leaves us with a question every coach, player, and parent should answer: What is your main thing? Because championships fade, statistics are forgotten, and the ball eventually stops bouncing. But the impact we make on people—the lives we serve, the character we build, and the relationships we cultivate—can last forever. Whether you’re a coach, player, parent, or simply someone trying to lead others well, this conversation will challenge you to refocus on what truly matters and keep the main thing the main thing. 🎙️ Coaching Minutiae The details matter. More Than Basketball: Kevin Merriweather on Family, Faith, Teaching & Indiana Girls Basketball

In this episode of Coaching Minutiae, Nic Carothers sits down with Indiana girls basketball legend Coach Kevin Merriweather for a conversation that reaches far beyond wins, rankings, offers, and championships. With 41 years in the game, Coach Merriweather has helped shape generations of players, coaches, and families across Indiana high school and AAU basketball. In this episode, he reflects on the meaning behind “The Family,” why he believes coaching is really about teaching, and how basketball can be used as a vehicle to build discipline, relationships, accountability, and life direction. Coach Merriweather shares honest wisdom for today’s parents, players, and coaches as they navigate recruiting, NIL, social media, the transfer portal, player development, and the pressure to chase exposure before building substance. He reminds listeners that relationships still matter, character still matters, and the work still matters. This conversation also touches the heart. Coach Merriweather opens up about the mentors who shaped him, the players who became part of his legacy, and a powerful personal testimony that helped him understand coaching as more than a career — but as a calling and ministry. For anyone who loves the game, teaches the game, parents a player, or leads young people through basketball, this episode is a reminder that the game is at its best when it builds more than athletes. It builds people. Support the show
