CYB 80: Measure Twice and Cut Once

Wood working carpenters have a saying, “Measure Twice – Cut Once”. Obviously the take away here is to slow down and carefully calculate your measuring prior to sawing a piece of wood. Careless measuring can cause a bad cut and a wasted piece of wood. We carry this same metaphor into youth baseball here so listen in and see the similar saying we use in youth baseball player development. Carpenters advise applies to baseball too. Thanks!

Coach Dave, I’m a former college basketball player and varsity football coach that finds myself coaching my son's 10u team. I've coached these kids (all classmates at the Christian school I work at) since they were 4 in every sport, but after coach pitch, I've tried to find other, more knowledgeable baseball coaches for them. Well, all the dads who have time and competency to coach have moved their kids to travel teams for the coming year, leaving me with 11 rec level kids and a couple of part time assistants. After listening to the first 16 episodes of your podcast and finding other online resources, I'm feeling more equipped to coach baseball than ever before. Since you gave out this email address in episode 16, I thought I should reach out and thank you for creating this resource. I fully intend to have every episode listened to before the season starts March 2nd. I do media production on the side and know the time it can take to do this kind of thing. So, thanks again!

Almost perfect

The philosophy of this podcast is pretty solid. My only issue is with the idea from the Matheny Manifesto that parents and players to be “silent” on the sidelines. In my opinion it’s old school mentality like this that is keeping the game of baseball from progressing to new heights. As long as the people on the sidelines encourage with positivity, I don’t care how loud they get. It makes it more fun for everyone. Also don’t really understand how a lefty thrower at an infield position is “dangerous” to them at the lower levels… because it’s not
