    Finding the Right Leader (in your future company)

    I get asked quite often about what type of company is best to start your career with?  My answer surprises a lot of students and professionals as the response has nothing to do with the name of the company.  My answer is to find a leader that can grow and develop you on a team that has a front row seat to the future of the company.   Working for an amazing company and a terrible leader is soul sucking, while working for a mediocre company and a leader that can grow and develop you will take you further in your career than you can imagine.   Questions for a future episode?     How Marketable Are You?

    In order to find a dream job, you want to be focused on giving yourself the best shot at success.  This means taking risks with the roles that you are willing to take and the city that you are seeking the job in.  If you're looking to work in Finance, then being open to working in one of the top fifteen major metropolitan cities gives you the best advantage to find the right role.  If you're seeking your dream job in your hometown of 55,000 people, then chances are you're going to struggle to find it.   Be open to taking risks in the location and the role itself.  Go gain experience in an adjacent career field that allows you to become more marketable all while being willing to potentially relocate to the right place.   Questions for a future episode?  Email me at commencementpodcast@gmail.com

    There are 3 principles that I encourage each time I meet a student in their final years of school.  Those 3 principles are; Network, Create, and Build your Brand.   This episode is all about networking and the importance it plays in helping shape your career path and helping you find your first job.   I know that students that network prior to submitting job applications are more likely to get hired as it's not what you know, it's who you know.

    Welcome to Commencement

    Welcome to Commencement!  The podcast that aims to help provide guidance for current college students and recent graduates on how to navigate the job search and set them up for success.  I've spent the last ten years mentoring students in my free time at various Universities and I've found that school doesn't always set students up for success.   I get questions from every student like, "how do I find my first job" or "what happens if I end up in the wrong role?"  Students are concerned with questions they have no experience with so I believe it's my role to help them succeed with as much advice as I can give.   I hope you enjoy Commencement, more episodes will follow soon.
