Living in a Good City - What Makes One, The Hidden Cost & What You Give Up | Episode 019

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you.Where you live might be the single most expensive financial decision you ever make, and most people never actually run the numbers on it. In this episode Umar and Dami break down what a so-called good city really costs - not just the rent, but the job market, the taxes, the car you are forced to own, the tires Houston roads eat every year, and the hidden cost of simply keeping up with the lifestyle a city expects of you. They walk through the six things they each weigh before deciding a place is worth living in, and why the same city can be a great call for one person and a terrible one for someone else. Then it gets personal. They put a real question on the table: would you move somewhere with nothing going on if it paid you significantly more? Dami talks about the friend who nearly doubled his salary in a town with one Walmart, and where his own number sits. Umar tells the story of taking his first job out of college in Tulsa, Oklahoma, knowing nobody, and choosing to move back to Dallas for roughly the same salary because the opportunity and the community were worth more. They each name one city they would move to and two they never could - Arizona, Miami, California, Atlanta traffic, New York apartments, and a detour through Lagos traffic. Plus two Is It Making Cent$ scenarios on moving to New York for the prestige and getting hit with a location-based pay cut, and the economic events: NVIDIA earnings, the Hugging Face acquisition, Meta's social media addiction lawsuit, and what Jackson Hole signalled about interest rates.Listen. InvestFest 2026 Recap - What We Learned, Who We Met & How We Networked | Episode 018

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you.Umar and Dami are back from Atlanta, and this episode is a full recap of their first ever InvestFest - the annual conference put on by the Earn Your Leisure team that has grown into something much bigger than a financial literacy event. They break down what InvestFest actually is for anyone who has never been, what it felt like to walk into a vendor marketplace with 30,000 people in it, and how they went from standing in the middle of it all with no plan on day one to running smooth interviews by day three. They get into the panels that hit hardest - Serena Williams on building an investment portfolio with 16 unicorns in it, Steve Harvey and Nick Cannon on getting blessed so you can bless others, Ian Dunlap's crowd control, the Nine to Five Millionaire workshop, an AI presentation with actual robots, and 19 Keys closing the whole thing out. Then the honest part: the exact marketing they ran to get the Common Cent$ name out, from the polos that turned into a conversation starter to the 250 flyers a day, the QR codes, and taking the Is It Making Cent$ segment live on the floor. They cover the most memorable moments too, including Umar interviewing Rico Love with no idea who he was, meeting Troy and Rashad, and the AI expert whose business card lived in her fingernails. They close with what they would do differently next year, a book giveaway, and why they are going VIP next time.Listen. Learn. Build. Let's make our money make sense… and cent$.

Formally Introducing Common Cent$ - How We Started, Our Mission & What's To Come | Bonus Episode

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you. This one is different. For the first time we are recording in a studio, and instead of breaking down a money topic we are officially introducing ourselves to you. Consider it a bonus catch-up episode: Umar and Dami step back from the charts and the spreadsheets to talk about how Common Cent$ actually came to be - the text message that started it, the years of investing that led up to it, and why two cousins decided the first-gen community needed a space to talk about business, finance and building long term wealth. They get into their individual money journeys, from Dami dabbling in Robinhood before the pandemic made him serious about trading, to Umar figuring out what a 401(k) match even was at his first job in 2018 and watching Nvidia, Tesla and Apple run without him. They lay out the mission behind the show - demystifying investing in households where it was mistaken for gambling, making financial literacy a normal conversation at home, and building the community that first-gen Nigerians already deserve. They also get honest about the parts nobody sees: the production meetings, the twenty-plus hours a week on top of full time jobs, working with family when you are both stubborn, and what almost twenty episodes has taught them. Then they close it out with a rapid fire round covering first stocks, money habits, the Nigerian parent phrases still living in their heads, cold showers, skydiving, dream vacations, and where Common Cent$ will be a year from now. Emergency Funds - How Much You Need, Where to Keep It & Mistakes to Avoid | Episode 017

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you.In this episode, Umar and Dami break down the emergency fund - one of the most misunderstood pieces of personal finance, and the one that quietly decides whether a rough month turns into years of debt. They define what an emergency fund actually is (think of it as your financial airbag) and, just as importantly, what it is not: not a vacation fund, not down payment money, not dry powder for buying the dip. From there they get into why it matters so much - staying out of high-interest credit card debt, never being forced to sell your investments at the worst possible time, and the peace of mind that genuinely changes how you move through life. Then the practical side: how much you actually need, how to calculate your essential monthly expenses and your income replacement window, and the factors that push your number higher or lower - variable income, dependents, single vs multi-income households, owning vs renting, and how stable your industry is. They compare where to park it (checking vs brokerage vs high yield savings), cover FDIC insurance limits, and debate the point where you have actually saved too much. Plus the biggest mistakes to avoid, best practices for building and replenishing it, two Is It Making Sense scenarios, and the latest economic events: Apple suing OpenAI, AI wearables, Nigeria's stock market becoming the world's top performer, and Missouri eliminating capital gains tax.Listen. How to Read Stock Charts - Candlesticks, Technicals & Putting It All Together | Episode 016

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you.In this episode, Umar and Dami break down how to actually read a stock chart - the skill that quietly separates guessing from investing. They start with what a chart really tells you (and what it doesn't), why price and timing matter even for long-term investors, and how investors and traders use charts differently. From there they walk through the anatomy of a chart: time frames, the three chart types, and a full breakdown of candlesticks - bodies, wicks, and the patterns worth knowing like the doji, hammer, hanging man, and marubozu. Then it's the core technicals - support and resistance, volume as confirmation, and moving averages, including the 200-day SMA and how EMA differs from SMA.The highlight is a live, top-down charting walkthrough on SpaceX - zooming from the monthly down to the one-hour, marking key levels, and stacking candlesticks, volume, and moving averages into real confluence. They close with the mistakes that trip people up - analysis paralysis and confirmation bias - and the best practices that fix them: work top-down, combine fundamentals with technicals, and plan your trade then trade your plan. Plus two Is It Making Sense scenarios and the latest economic events: Bitcoin's four-year cycle, the Trump coin lesson, and SpaceX getting fast-tracked into the Nasdaq 100.Listen. Learn. Build. Understanding Market Cycles - Bull vs Bear Markets, the 4 Phases & Investor Psychology | Episode 015

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you.In this episode, Umar and Dami break down market cycles - the single thing that quietly makes or breaks your portfolio. They explain what bull and bear markets actually are, how corrections differ from crashes, and why the market is a never-ending ebb and flow between fear and greed. Dami walks through the four phases of a market cycle using Wyckoff logic - accumulation, markup, distribution, and markdown - so you can see how smart money quietly buys your shares while everyone else is panic selling. From there they get into what really drives these cycles: company earnings, interest rates and the Fed, external shocks like COVID and war, and plain old investor sentiment. The back half is all about putting it into practice. They cover the biggest mistakes to avoid - trying to time the top and bottom, cutting your contributions during a bear market, and confusing a normal correction with a crash - then share the habits that actually work: dollar cost averaging through every cycle, keeping an emergency fund and dry powder ready, and rebalancing so no single position can sink you. Umar and Dami get honest about their own expensive lessons, run two real "Is It Making Sense" scenarios, and close with the latest economic events: the SpaceX IPO and Elon's trillionaire moment, the Iran peace treaty and the market rally, and the upcoming FOMC decisionListen. Engineering a Promotion at Work - Framework, Mistakes to Avoid & First-Gen Realities | Episode 014

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you. In Episode 014, Umar and Dami get into one of the most overlooked wealth-building moves you can make: engineering your own promotion. Your income is your most powerful financial tool, and every year you leave money on the table is a year lost to compounding. This episode breaks down exactly why most people never get promoted — and it is not because they are lazy. From understanding what working hard actually gets you, to building visibility, knowing your market value, and having the promotion conversation the right way, Umar and Dami lay out a practical, no-fluff framework you can start using now. They also get personal about what it is like to navigate corporate America as first-generation Nigerian-Americans — from the cultural humility they were raised with, to learning eye contact, code switching, and the art of the corporate dry snitch. They round out the episode with their Is It Making Sense segment featuring two real workplace scenarios, plus economic updates on the Anthropic IPO, the potential Tesla and SpaceX merger, Robin Hood’s new AI trading agents, and what to watch heading into the next FOMC meeting. Living Within Your Means - The Real Definition, Lifestyle Creep & the Social Cost | Episode 013

Welcome back to Common Cent$, where two Nigerian-American millennials break down money, culture, and building wealth - from the perspective of first-generation adults trying to figure it out just like you. Episode 013 gets into one of those topics that sounds simple on the surface but hits different when you actually run the numbers — living within your means. Most people think they're doing it because nothing feels broken. But feelings are not facts, and in this episode, Umar and Dami break down what living within your means actually looks like beyond the surface definition. It's not just spending less than you earn. It's a system — one that makes room for an emergency fund, consistent investing and saving, and a future version of yourself that actually has something to work with. They walk through the step-by-step framework: starting with your net pay (not your gross), knowing your fixed expenses, treating investing like a non-negotiable, and understanding what's actually left for discretionary spending. They also get real about the lies we tell ourselves to justify financial decisions — "I deserve this," "it was on sale," "I'll make it back" — and break down lifestyle creep, what it is, how it sneaks up on you, and why making more money does not automatically solve the problem. Plus, they talk about the social cost of financial discipline: the isolation, the friends you lose, the explanations you get tired of giving, and why it's all worth it in the long run. The Is It Making Sense segment brings two great scenarios — one where they disagree — and economic updates cover the Anthropic and SpaceX IPOs, Trump's trip to China with the CEO "Avengers," the Clarity Act for crypto regulation, NVIDIA earnings, and the new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh stepping in for Jerome Powell.
