Common Thread - Episode 16 (Chad Posick)

Rory and Greg sit down with Chad Posick, a professor of criminal justice and criminology at Georgia Southern University. Chad also plays guitar in the Georgia-based hardcore band Cult Body. Chad, Greg, and Rory have known each other for almost 30 years. The three grew up in Fairport, NY, and become friends through skateboarding and their love of Rochester Hardcore. In addition to being a college professor, Chad has published over 35 articles and has participated and lead projects related to investigating the reporting of hate crime by victims, a nation-wide police-community interaction survey project, and an anti-gang initiative. Presently, Chad is focused on research and advocacy efforts for children who have been the victims of abuse. He speaks about practical ways the average person can get involved and help children by becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). CASAs are people who help children who were victims of abuse during the legal process when a parent is unable to do so. Oftentimes CASAs are necessary because the parent is the perpetrator of abuse. Chad, Rory, and Greg also discuss policing reform, the rise of authoritarianism, ICE, and the importance of grassroots, community based movements. The episode concludes with an update on Cult Body and a series of shows the band recently played in southern Georgia and Florida. This episode is a nice companion piece to the episodes featuring Will Cleveland and Katy Otto. Common Thread - Episode 15 (Knifetwister Records - Raph Copeland)

Rory and Greg interview Raph Copeland, who founded Knifetwister Records using the prize money he won in a pool tournament. Knifetwister is unique in that is works with bands from all across the hardcore, punk, and metal spectrum. In a fun throwback, Knifetwister is also a web-based fanzine with written interviews. Raph and Knifetwister Records operate just outside of New York City. We hear a little bit about how Raph came to find punk music in the late 1980s and 90s. We discuss Knifetwister's recent release, a compilation benefiting the homeless called "Not In Our City." "Not In Our City" features tacks from bands in NYC including Rebelmatic, and No Call No Show among others. Raph talks about how punk rock has influenced the trajectory of his life, his career working in the tech industry, his role as a parent, and his interest in lock picking. Common Thread - Episode 12.1 (Will Cleveland)

Episode 12, part 1 features an interview with Will Cleveland, who is well known in the Rochester area for his work as a journalist with the Democrat & Chronicle, his role with the Police Accountability Board, and his detailed and prolific writing on the regional beer scene and craft breweries. Will is as affable as he is outspoken. Consequently, this interview is humorous and insightful. The discussion kicks off with a light-hearted examination of drop ceilings, which serves as a metaphorical (and literal) backdrop for exploring deeper themes of nostalgia and memory. As the conversation unfolds, Will recounts his journey into journalism, emphasizing the influence of his father, who instilled in him the value of being well-informed and engaged with the community. Throughout the episode, Will elaborates on his tenure at the Democrat & Chronicle, as well as his high school newspaper and newspapers in Montana and Ithaca. He details the challenges and successes he encountered while covering breaking news stories, including an account of a notorious triple homicide in Rochester, which required him to quickly mobilize and report on a rapidly evolving situation. The episode highlights his transition from journalism to a role within the Police Accountability Board, where he continues to advocate for transparency and reform. This transition underscores the importance of accountability in public institutions and the necessity for journalists to evolve into roles that further their commitment to social justice and community engagement. Check back on October 29th for the conclusion and part 2 of our interview with Will.
