#7 - China’s Economic History and the tough path ahead

Once upon a time, in the first hundred years of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1468 AD), Chinese technology was ahead of the rest of the world. It possessed both a strong navy and an army. It took over from India, the post of the largest economy in the world and remained there until the 20th century when America rose to take its place. But China has now returned to claim back its power. The graph below is a snapshot of China’s fast real GDP growth vs the world. If you know anything about compounding forces, you understand the effect of a growing double-digit for a long time. From 1971 until 2018, the average growth of Chinese real GDP was around 10% yearly against a 2.8% global rate. Since 2010, the Chinese economy has slowed down. Its slowdown is congruent with the rest of the world, which is also decelerating. Economic growth rate in China is slowing down caused by diverse factors such as: One-child’s policy and Population getting old Loss of Entrepreneurship in the US Accelerating protection from other countries, including the US imposing tariffs and taxes on Chinese goods High debt-to-GDP ratio Youth unemployment Excessive government intervention ------------- MEMBERSHIP: Sign up for my membership here: patreon.com/CompoundImprovements That's my most valuable resource. #2 - Where to put my money?

So we’ll talk about how to invest that money by exploring the different options: 1)  The first point is fixed-return assets The most common fixed-return asset is bonds. Bonds: you can either buy public or private bonds. Private bonds usually are offered by banks or large companies. The premise is that you are lending to these private institutions for a fixed return on your money. Public bonds are offered by the governments. It’s considered a safer investment than private bonds as you can only miss out on your investment if the government goes bankrupt. Conversely, in private bonds, the probability of an institution going out of business is higher than in a government. For instance, in the 2008 crisis, a lot of banks went bust and whoever was holding their bonds, ended up holding the bag. That’s why professionals refer to bond investing as a negative-art meaning that your objective is to pick not necessarily what is the highest interest that will be paid to you but an institution that will not fail so that you ensure that you’ll be paid as per agreement. 2)  Variable returns: a) Stocks: the thing to realise here is that you’re buying a piece of the company. In the long-term, however you cut the data it’s really clear: stocks are the best returning asset in the long-term. The reason most people don’t invest in stocks is due to the volatility. But in the long-term, they will outperform everything. Because they are productivity producing assets and therefore directly contributing b) Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT’s) - This is a way to purchase property in fractions, similar to becoming partner at any given company when acquiring its shares. Basically, it is a way to invest in any incoming-producing property in the click of a button. This is a very attractive investment option for those less tolerant to market volatility as REIT’s tend to increase in market value over the long run, historically speaking. Moreover, this type of investment pays “rent”, which is its dividend monthly in most cases, and in some countries, is tax-free. c) Commodities: If you want to add leverage to your portfolio, the way to get it is either through leveraged funds or commodities. This is for more advanced investors so we will just mention that this exists but won’t go it more thorough into it.
