Joy & Grief: Seeing the Gentleness of God Through a Story with Johanna Rojas Vann

Send us Fan Mail We all experience tragic circumstances in our lives. When you're in the middle of that, it's hard to see where God is or feel him near. Those of us who are sons and daughters of the One True God can hold on to the hope of the cross, but that doesn't make the hurt go away. How do we get through it or help others through that?  This week we see just that in the story told by Novelist Johanna Rojas Vann. Where Wilted Flowers Bloom has quickly become one of my all time favorite novels. I cried. I laughed. I had moments where I had to set it down because the Lord began speaking to me. This is one of those novels you just have to read for yourself. Share it with a friend!  Conversation Highlights: Joy and grief can coexistGod can heal even the most tragic of circumstances we walk throughOur sorrow and grief don’t go away, they stay with us in some capacity our entire livesHealing from deep grief is a process, not an instant answer to prayerPain and sorrow will always be a part of our lives because this was never how things were intended to beBecause of our faith, we can have hope and hold on to God, that keeps us above the waves of griefNo matter what tragic thing you’ve walked through, see it through the lens of the hope of ChristOur burdens are too heavy for us to carry, we must bring them to Jesus and lay them downGod is gentle, he is our shepherd who loves us gently even in our painTips on how to come alongside someone walking through griefConnect with Johanna! God is Always Near: What to do When You Can’t Feel His Presence with Monika Kirkland

Send us Fan Mail There are times in our lives, probably more than we wish to admit where God doesn't feel as close as he once did. We look around and wonder what off ramp we exited on, because he feels like he's no where in sight. It can be hard to know what to do when you can't feel God's presence. I have been there and it's an incredibly hard place to be.  My wonderful friend Monika has been there too. That's why she wrote her debut book on the topic! God is ever with us and she wants us to be able to remember that in our every day lives. Monika Kirkland is a Christian writer, podcaster, wife and mother of four. She is passionate about encouraging and equipping women to cultivate intimacy with Christ and experience the transformative power of the gospel from the inside out.  Conversation Highlights: The rest we are longing for isn’t found in a quick fix, it’s only found in Christ aloneWe can’t always get rid of the things that cause us stress but we can invite God into it and learn how to live from a place of restIt’s common to just go through the motions of our faithThe majority of our faith is lived out in the in-between times, not just at church or Bible study, but what we consider the mundane daily activities we doWe will miss out on the joy that comes with walking in intimacy with Christ if we don’t recognize his closenessPrayer is one of the most accessible yet underutilized parts our faithSometimes we wait until we get to our breaking point to cry out to God, we don’t have to wait - he’s already there with usGod cares about the little things in your life, and he deeply cares about youThe in between small moments in life is where your faith truly growsRemember the truth that God is right there with youConnect with Monika! When What You Prayed For Is Harder Than You Expected with Melissa Miller

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever prayed for something just to receive the answer and think, "what on earth was I thinking??" Sometimes living in God's yes is harder than we expect. What do we do with these mixed emotions that no one seems to be able to help us sort through? Melissa Miller is a family girl, writer, and Reboot Retreat facilitator living in Tennessee. She is a contributor to sites such as Mother.ly, Her View from Home, and the YouVersion Bible app. Melissa has been married for over twenty years, has five children, and is an advocate for vulnerable children in foster care. Having experienced an unconventional adoption as a teen and later adopting a sibling set from foster care, she has a heart to help kids from hard places find belonging. Melissa loves playing pickleball and thinks “just one more chapter” is a perfectly reasonable bedtime strategy. Conversation Highlights: Don’t be afraid to ask God for what’s on your heartKeep an eye out for the things that God is already doing in your lifeWe may expect God to move in one way but he has a better way plannedRemember what God has promised and cling to that instead of your expectationsLet God be the hero and author of your story, your job is to respond to him and obey along the wayChange fatigue, when there are lots of changes happening at once and your nervous system is having a hard time keeping upWe can beat ourselves up with the saying, “But I prayed for this”, but we need to name & validate how we feel. It doesn’t mean we’re not grateful, it means we’re adjustingJust because it’s a big God story doesn’t mean it isn’t hardWhich season are you in? Every Woman Deserves Hope: Obedience Leads to Lives Changed with Rachelle Starr

Send us Fan Mail I had the opportunity to talk to one of the women who was in the film, Rachelle Star, the founder of Scarlet Hope. That was the ministry highlighted in the film. Rachelle's story of obedience to reach those who others overlook is absolutely inspiring!  Rachelle Starr is first and foremost a lover of Jesus. In 2007, Rachelle founded the nonprofit, Scarlet Hope, when God called her to share His hope and love with exploited and trafficked women. Scarlet Hope has since expanded across ten cities in the United States and has trained thousands to launch similar nonprofits worldwide under Rachelle’s leadership. Rachelle is an entrepreneur at heart and enjoys developing innovative ways to reach and disciple women, wherever they are. As a speaker, coach, and author of Outrageous Obedience, Rachelle has shared her story on numerous platforms to inspire women to live an outrageous life for Jesus. When Rachelle’s not sharing the gospel in a strip club, you will find her spending time with her husband, Josh, and two boys, baking tasty treats, or playing card games. This conversation was such an inspiration to me personally. Even after years of following the Lord faithfully there is always more waiting for us. I highly encourage you to watch this film. You can download it directly off the website (linked below) or you can buy the DVD (linked below). There is also a FREE 6 week Bible Study created to go with this film and again... I can't encourage you enough to do it! Find some friends or your Bible Study group, watch the movie and then do the study. God will do a mighty work in your life through this film if you allow Him to.  Conversation Highlights: Scarlet Hope offers hope in the form of home cooked meals that open doors to conversations about ChristWhen the heart of someone changes, real internal change occursSimply listening to others, not trying to fix their wounds or their problems, can make such an impact on their lifeAsk questions that are genuinely curious, because the Holy Spirit will show up in that moment & reveal things to othersLooking back and remembering what God has done in the past continues to grow our faithEvery step you take, God is right there - especially when you are being obedient to the Holy SpiritAfter you’ve grown your obedience muscle with the Lord, no matter what he calls you to next, you’ll be more inclined to do it because you’ve seen His faithfulness beforeBefore the first step of obedience, you have to be convicted by the Holy Spirit to pursue itConnect with Rachelle and watch the film! A Heavenly Father Changes Everything: He Calls Me Daughter with Rick Alitzer

Send us Fan Mail We are starting off the season by talking with the Director and creator of the outstanding film, He Calls Me Daughter. Rick was one of my favorite interviews of the entire season. His enthusiasm is contagious and the film God commissioned him to create changed my life. I don't just say that because he's on the podcast, I tell you that because it is 100% the truth.  Rick Altizer directed the Kendrick Brothers’ documentary Show Me the Father, which played in more than 1,100 theaters nationwide and earned an A+ CinemaScore—an honor achieved by only a handful of films each year. In addition, Altizer has directed three award-winning documentaries for comedian Chonda Pierce: Unashamed (#2 film in America), Enough (#2 film in America), and Laughing in the Dark (#5 film in America). A two-time Dove Award–nominated music producer, Altizer has sold more than one million albums and has produced music for artists including Johnny Cash, Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, and Russ Taff. As a recording artist, he has released seven studio albums and earned three Top 10 singles.  Altizer is currently directing the feature documentary He Calls Me Daughter. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, Jan. They have two sons, David and Matthew, two daughters-in-law, Laura and Kimmy, and three grandsons: Ryan, Caleb, and JJ. "He Calls Me Daughter" finished in the top 5 releases at the box office during its theatrical run. The film has a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. What you'll hear in this episode:  God has given us everything we need because He knows it allGod is not bound by our time or dates, He moves beyond what we can comprehendA Father Wound response would sound like “I knew I couldn’t trust you God.” but that can be reset and healedA functional orphan, someone who goes to church, does all the things yet doesn’t really believe God is their Father. They struggle with actually believing God is for them and with them.Learning to trust God is a struggle but He is trustworthyOur problem with connecting with God could be that we are projecting on to God the traits of our earthly dad, and those two things need to disconnect, God is the perfect FatherI don’t feel valued, I don’t feel seen: the result of a father woundIt’s through Christ that we are designated as daughter to GodConnect with Rick and watch the film! If It’s Not Good, God’s Not Done Yet: A Testimony of Infertility and Surrender to God with Danae Lichtenberger

Send us Fan Mail The title of this week's episode is applicable to every trial we face in life. If it's not good, God's not done yet. Is that just the truth? Heart Gripping Stories That Inspire Our Faith and Build Our Confidence in Christ with Mark Ellis

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever been having one of those days where things just don't seem like they will get better but then all of a sudden God intervenes with a story? You know, a story of someone who has seen the goodness of God and is testifying about it?  Mark is an expert at helping us hear these testimonies through the work that he does with God Reports!  Mark Ellis grew up in California and graduated from UC Berkeley. At age 29 he accepted Christ after reading Evidence That Demands A Verdict by Josh McDowell. Mark is a seasoned storyteller and journalist. After working in commercial real estate for 18 years and then serving in full-time ministry for nine years, Mark pursued a career in journalism. Since his first writing assignment in 1999, Ellis has personally witnessed the impact one’s personal story can have on others and how these first-hand accounts inspire faith and encourage trust in God. After a mission trip to the southern Philippines in 2004, Ellis felt God calling him to launch a new website that would shine a positive light on the stories of faithful missionaries around the globe. In 2009, he launched God Reports, which to-date has received more than 16 million views from over 200 countries.
