    ConstitutionUK: An LTI and IPA Collaboration [Video]

    Contributor(s): Daniel Regan, Paul Sullivan, Professor Conor Gearty, Peter Bryant, Malte Werner, Chris Fryer, Darren Moon | In January 2015, the London School of Economics and Political Science launched an innovative civic engagement project which aimed to crowdsource a written constitution for the UK. The project employed a proven enterprise idea-management system, augmenting the core platform with a light-touch, flexible pedagogy and third-party social curation tools. Over 14 weeks, our innovative design supported the formation of a community of some 1500 users, who delivered a written constitution derived from 700 ideas, 9000 comments and 25000 votes. The project engaged the community in a unique, open and social learning experiment while delivering tangible outputs. SNP Leader Nicola Sturgeon described the project as “…a fantastic example of an initiative which is timely, innovative and… which could have a lasting impact on public affairs.

    Constitutional Convention [Video]

    Contributor(s): Professor Conor Gearty | On Wednesday 22nd April Constitution UK held its constitutional convention where Community champions, other members of the online community and facilitators joined together to distil the ideas on the Constitution UK website and turn them into clauses. After hours of debate they were joined by experts Sophia Cannon, Barrister; Paul Evans, Clerk of the journals, Parliament; Professor Tony Travers, Director of LSE London; Professor Emeritus Carol Harlow, Professor of Law; Dr Andrew Blick, Lecturer in Politics and Contemporary History and Robert Craig, LSE Law department. At the end of the discussion the groups reported back to each other the clauses they had agreed upon. These decisions were brought together and formed the people’s constitution.
