Constructing The Clubhouse is the only podcast about starting a comedy club in Barcelona during a pandemic. Hosts Dr. Matthew Murtha and John Allis have opened a new club, The Comedy Clubhouse, and are sharing their experiences. Selecting comics, setting prices, and dealing with disorderly patrons—all are fodder for conversation in Constructing the Clubhouse.
The new Clubhouse on Canvis Nous begins to take shape. Matt's getting ready to install the pool, and John has taken to minting his own coins with a hammer.
Covid + capacity = trouble, but that's not stopping plans from pushing ahead.
The Northern Canvas
#1 bestselling author John Allis and returning touring comedian Dr. Matthew Murtha are back on the Barcelona scene. Almost.
There was a fake book, invoicing, and dodgy lawyers; but the pair have a new location. Lots to announce, and lots to be excited for.
This is not goodbye!
The Comedy Clubhouse is growing up! That's right, we're getting a new basement.
But that means working with engineers and figuring out what the hell to do with a bodega license without degustacion? What does it mean to be licensed, anyway? And who cares if you're legal?
Well… John and Matt do, and they're figuring out how to make it work.
It's not the end of the world (but you can see it from here)
John and Dr. Murtha drop some hot news that careful listeners may (or may not) have expected. Nothing is set in stone yet, there's no writing on the wall, triggers remain yet-to-be-pulled.
Fil Varney is the host of Sunday Funday at the Comedy Clubhouse, but this week he's better known as Matt and John's guest.
Fil Varney is from Utah in the U.S., and has spent the better part of his life trying to pretend he’s from anywhere other than Utah in the U.S., which is hard to do when you look that much like Mitt Romney. Fil’s has been living and performing in Barcelona for 9 months, and has found his niche running the open mic show at the Comedy Clubhouse.
John has developed a taste for kicking patrons out of the club (is the club a magnet for these people?), and a new bartender started working at the bar without prior consent.
The Kyla Cobbler Exit Interview
Kyla Cobbler, bartender extraordinnaire and internet celeb, has left the Comedy Clubhouse for greener pastures. She's leaves behind an unfillable hole, and she takes with her an unfilled hole. She returns to discuss what she's been up to, and shows us that she'll be no stranger to the Clubhouse going forward.
Spiraling from the loss, Matt and John are trying out new bartenders and new shows.
I hate podcasts but this is great! Love you guys 💕
