    Live Like You Are Alive

    What does it actually look like to live as someone who has been made new? In Colossians 3, Paul gives us a picture of the transformed Christian life by telling us to “put on” a new way of living. Like adding layers as the seasons change, we are called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, then hold it all together with love. But this isn't about simply trying harder to become a better person. These qualities flow from knowing who we already are in Christ. We are chosen. We are dearly loved. That identity becomes the foundation for genuine humility, and from that humility, the other layers of Christlike character begin to take shape. Paul also challenges the divisions we use to separate ourselves from others. Race, religion, culture, social status, and other differences lose their power when we recognize that our identity is ultimately found in Christ. The message is both simple and challenging: if we have been raised to new life in Christ, we ought to live like it.     What does it really mean to live as someone who has been raised with Christ? In this episode, we continue through Colossians 3 and explore Paul's powerful picture of the Christian life as death and resurrection. Paul isn't simply telling us to try harder or become better people. He is reminding us that something has already changed. In Christ, our old life has died, and we have been raised to a new life. So what do we do with the things that still pull us back toward the old way of living? Paul challenges us to put away the attitudes and behaviors that belong to our former life, not because we are trying to earn God's love, but because they no longer fit who we are in Christ. Using the picture of a horse moving out of balance, this conversation explores what it means to recognize when our lives are getting out of step with God and allow Him to bring us back into alignment. This isn't a message about guilt or perfection. It's an invitation to live from our new identity in Christ. If we have been raised with Him, then we don't have to keep living like we're still dead.     Rise and Shine

    What does it actually mean to be raised with Christ? Colossians 3 calls us to set our hearts and minds on things above, but what does that look like when real life keeps demanding our attention? Business frustrations, broken things around the house, political turmoil, difficult relationships, and the ordinary noise of life can easily pull our hearts in a hundred different directions. This message takes an honest look at what it means to intentionally orient our hearts toward Christ. Setting our minds on things above isn't about pretending earthly problems don't matter or trying to manufacture the right emotions. It is about choosing where our hearts will be anchored, much like setting a cornerstone or choosing, day after day, to remain committed in a lifelong marriage. The gospel changes us from the inside out. Rather than simply trying to change our behavior and hoping our hearts eventually follow, God transforms our hearts and affections first. As our hearts become centered on Christ, our thoughts, choices, and actions begin to follow.     Putting Down the Highlighter

    I used to carry a leather-bound Bible with my name in gold letters, color-coded, underlined, worn soft at the edges from years of use. I loved what it said about me. In this episode, a sermon on Colossians 2 sends me back through my own story: a leadership class in Lexington, a habit I'm not proud of, and a 300-year-old sermon by John Wesley that finally named something in me I didn't have words for. It's a conversation about the difference between a spiritual discipline and a performance, and about what happens when a good thing quietly becomes a measuring stick. I don't land on a tidy answer.     Wrong Turns, Dead Ends

    What does it look like to stay on the right road in our faith journey? In this episode, we continue through Colossians 2 as Paul warns believers about the wrong turns that can quietly pull us away from the truth of Jesus. Human philosophy, religious rituals, spiritual powers, and man-made rules can all become distractions when they take our focus off Christ. Paul reminds us that the fullness of God dwells in Jesus. He is not simply one wise teacher among many or another voice offering spiritual advice. He is fully God, fully sufficient, and the sovereign Lord over all. That truth gives us a firm foundation when we're facing doubt, pressure, or the opinions of others. We don't have to measure our faith by someone else's spiritual checklist. We don't have to find our identity in rituals, rules, or religious performance. Our identity is found in Christ, and our connection to Him is what holds everything together.     Merging Lane

    Receiving Christ isn't a parking spot. It's a merging lane." That's the line from Pastor Isaac's sermon this week that Rachel couldn't shake, mostly because she'd spent the summer proving it true in her own life, without meaning to. In this episode of Conversations in the Barn, Rachel talks about the quiet way her Bible reading and her workout routine both slipped this summer, not from any single decision, just morning by morning, until getting back into either one took more effort than staying consistent ever had. Along the way: what Colossians 2 actually means by rooted, built up, and strengthened, why habit stacking turned out to be more theological than she expected, and an honest word about what it looks like to not be overflowing with thankfulness yet, and why that might be okay.
