I enjoyed the mix of educator, administrator, and parent input in this episode. Mrs. Brown’s comment that she doesn’t get her bucket filled by positive input from administration alone, but through a combination of reciprocal positive daily interactions with all corners of the school, resonated with me. It reinforced for me the importance of community in learning.
I have memories of groups and cliques, of in-groups and out-groups, from my elementary and middle school years in the 70s and 80s. When I asked my 9 year old (ACDS student) who her friends were at school, she seemed not to understand. I clarified with, “Well, who do you play with at recess?” She shrugged and said, “Everyone, mom. We’re all friends.”
I relish the fact she didn’t understand my question, that her entire school is her community. A large part of community is that sense of belonging. I appreciate how hard everyone works to build that.
Looking forward to Episode 2!
