3 Point Perspective: The Illustration Podcast

I’ve listened for years to this show and I feel like I’m friends with all the hosts. They give great insights into the lives of professional illustrators, as well as answer a lot of questions.

In general I am a very positive guy. In the latest podcast (Oct 2025) they both ragged on people who say $400 for their online class is too expensive then went on to talk about how stressful selling their house with a pool is because the realtor can’t figure out how to turn on the pool heater. It really brought me down and came off as totally out of touch. I love art but I think these guys don’t realise how those comments discourage people who are working really hard both just to make ends meet and then make art for fun….And yes $400 is out of reach for a lot of people who love art.

I’ve been listening to this podcast for a long time and the hosts are interesting and charming in their own ways. They are also talented. They also often have enjoyable guests. It should be obvious that this is a promotional device for SVSLearn. The podcast promotes itself as “a place where you can learn how to be a professional, get hired, and how to make a difference in the world with your art.” If you’re listening though, the hosts also let slip from time to time that the reality is they need this revenue stream, because even with their talents and publishing history, illustration is not a reliable source of income. At times it can be frustrating. The podcast and social media format can convince you that you know these people, that you’re friends or part of a network. You are a sales target. They are “mentors” in the same way the cashier at Target or the barista, or your local State Farm agent are “mentors.” You would never think someone that winked at you for a tip was actually a mentor. Ultimately, they just want your money with as little friction as possible. When the money stops, there is no relationship after. Which is fine. Just don’t get confused. It’s the course economy. It’s mostly a fantasy they are selling, but an enjoyable one. The frustration you occasionally hear in their voices about why they charge what they charge comes from financial insecurity and scarcity. They are tired of it (like many), and want to be paid what they feel they deserve (ie what they aren’t getting from their illustration careers). You’re never going to network with them unless you pay them a few hundred dollars a month or for some odd reason you can benefit them or their business. It’s just how it is. Many people have this mindset. They are too internet “famous” for new connections that aren’t transactions. Like Lee has said in past episodes, he wants you to pay to be his friend. He is not interested in friends anymore. The follower count keeps them warm at night. JK ;). It’s the hellscape we are all living in 2026. Secure the bag. It can be an enjoyable listen though.

I really wanted to like this podcast. The first episode was 20+ minutes wasted listening to the male speakers continually talk over the one woman on the show. And they aren’t that interesting. Especially the professor with the scratchy voice. He sure likes to hear himself talk. C’mon guys. It’s 2025, almost 2026 and you still haven’t gotten the memo about letting women speak uninterrupted? Lame. Do better, guys.
