CreativeMornings is a monthly breakfast lecture series for creative types – this is the podcast of the Sheffield chapter. Sheffield is home to the largest number of creative work spaces and artist studios outside London. It proudly calls itself the ‘outdoor city’ with 61% green space – 250 parks, woodlands and gardens. Lots of fresh air and fresh ideas in this Northern city of down-to-earth, no-nonsense, adventurous folks. Listen in to hear what they have to say.

    Magid Magid on connecting and capturing people's imaginations

    This talk is from July 2018 by Magid Magid, AKA the Lord Mayor of Sheffield. A British-Somali activist and politician, his appointment attracted significant media attention, as he is the first Somali, the youngest-ever, and the first Green Party councillor to hold the role. For many Sheffield folk, Magid has been both an inspiration and a breathe of fresh air. In his talk, he reflects on how he’s used positive messages and creativity to connect with people on an emotional level. There is no doubt he’s been a champion of Sheffield and everything the city has to offer. Lord Mayor Magid demonstrates ways in which he has acted with the intention to connect and do things differently. Starting with the the squat. The 29-year-old is the youngest Mayor the city has seen. His inauguration photo, featuring ‘that squat’ went viral online and Magid’s now famous Doc Marten’s and yellow cap have appeared in newspapers and timelines around the world. ‘One of the ways I’ve tried to do things is really try and merge a political message or statement in a fun way, with an undertone of a serious message behind it…I’ve realised is it works’.

    Lindsey Green / Helping people gain the courage to be curious

    Lindsey Green co-founded Frankly, Green + Webb, a digital agency working with cultural organisations all over the world to design products, experiences and services that integrate digital and physical elements. This is a talk about encouraging people to be curious and needing the right questions, not the right answers.

    Felicity Hoy / Death, art, the universe and people

    Felicity Hoy AKA. Felicity the Facilitator has been self-employed in Sheffield for 6 years working on projects that make use of and transform empty or underused buildings. Her interest lies in creating something new and modern in old spaces that will provide self- employed, creative people opportunities. But mainly so people can have fun! Felicity gave us a candid insight into how and why she creates and the inner workings of her constantly active mind. For the tough global topic of death, it became very much a topic of that being a drive to create more and create meaningfully: ‘My life is based on trying to do things that progressively make me ok with the fact that I’m going to die’ - Felicity Hoy.     Kim Swan / The power of bread

    Episode three of the CreativeMornings Sheffield podcast features a talk by Kim Swan, who told us all about the power of bread. We gathered 08:30 at The Amphitheatre, the 1000-seater just behind the train station with the best views across the city from the comfort of a grassy bank. We had a brief talk from some Friends of Sheaf Valley Park and then strolled over to the old sweet factory where Kim had the cob oven all fired up (since 03:30!). There was fresh REAL bread, butter and jam and coffee laid out to enjoy whilst we continued her story. It was a non-tech, open-air out in the elements CMsurvival edition and it was brilliant.
