Great episode, and I totally agree with your logic on the way the trial should have played out according to the law. You can have your own opinions on where you think Lindsay should go because she murdered 3 children but ultimately you as a juror are obligated to apply the case to the law and put opinions aside. HOWEVER, I’m really disheartened by both of your stances on the healthcare system and placing blame on her psychiatrists. What the general public does not understand is that physicians and medical providers do the best we can with the information we have (aside from the rare “bad apples”, which I do recognize you’ll get that in any profession). There was no evidence that Lindsay Clancy told her psychiatrist that she was hearing voices prior to killing her children. Her psychiatrist can only add/change/take away medications based on the information that Lindsay is willing to share and based off of clinical observations during the (brief) interactions you have with said patient. Doing so I’m sure was not taken lightly, and ultimately every change of her meds was done to try to help her. Your perception of doctors pushing pills because of “big pharma” making money is actually totally not how that works. As a physician I have NEVER ONCE gotten a kick back for a medication I’m prescribing or ANY kick backs from “big pharma” for that matter. We treat our patients with what we think is evidence based, best practice, based on our working diagnoses. And some of that is what you may consider “holistic” approaches- therapy first, no meds unless therapy alone is inadequate, etc. but I am very curious to know what holistic things you think could have helped Lindsay if she was in enough of mental disarray to murder the 3 most precious things to her. Please, please stop villainizing doctors and the medical field. Most of us have entered this profession and sacrificed so much of our life to HELP people. What I (hope) you actually mean to direct your anger with is the lack of social support for post partum mothers, lack of funding, lack of maternity leave in the US, the increased incidence of post partum mood disorders since mothers have had to rush back to work after 6-8 weeks when their life is flipped upside down. The lack of support from workplaces to allow mothers adequate time to pump, sick time to take care of their children when they cannot go to daycare, sending their children to daycare before they’re even 2 months because otherwise you will lose your job! These are all things worth discussing and I believe any person (including healthcare professionals) will hands down agree that this is the bigger issue. But please think before you speak and please get a better understanding of just how far removed “big pharma” is from actual day to day medical practices and physicians who are prescribing medication based on evidence based data of gold standards for treating PPD, PPP, and not some “holistic remedy” that would’ve prevented this instead. Long time listener, first time commenter ever on a podcast, but again, I am disappointed.
