We Were Warned Not to Go There: Colorado City & the FLDS

Growing up near St. George, Utah, Chelsey remembers Colorado City as the place you were warned not to go. In Episode 3 of Curious Enough, Alison and Chelsey go down the rabbit hole of Colorado City, Arizona and Hildale, Utah — the isolated border communities that became synonymous with the FLDS, Warren Jeffs, polygamy, and one of the strangest chapters of modern American religious history. But this one is different because Chelsey actually grew up nearby. She shares what she remembers about visiting Colorado City, the enormous unfinished houses she saw, the warnings she heard growing up, and the stories surrounding the community and its local police. Then they dig into what was actually happening behind the scenes: the rise of Warren Jeffs, the United Effort Plan land trust, the relationship between FLDS leadership and local government, and the federal investigation that eventually exposed discrimination and misconduct within the community. How did one religious group gain so much control over a town? Why were outsiders treated differently? And what happened to Colorado City after Warren Jeffs? It’s religion, power, secrecy, small-town rumors, personal memories, and a very deep rabbit hole. 🎙️ Curious EnoughHosted by Alison & Chelsey Two friends. Too many questions.Stay curious, stay weird. Heaven’s Gate & The Yuba County Five: Two Mysteries That Still Don’t Make Sense | Curious Enough Ep. 2

What happens when a UFO-obsessed group becomes one of America’s most infamous cults—and five young men disappear after a basketball game, only to leave behind a mystery that still has no clear explanation? In Episode 2 of Curious Enough, Alison and Chelsey dive into two bizarre true stories that have fascinated people for decades. Alison unpacks Heaven’s Gate, the California-based group led by Marshall Applewhite that believed a spacecraft traveling behind the Hale-Bopp comet offered a path to a higher existence.
