Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, wrote consistenly for 20 years before she "made it" with the famous book. In her book, Big Magic, she she talks about eating "shit sandwiches" as her measure for whether or not she wanted to keep devoting herself to writing.
