But this episode looks beyond the conventional geopolitical story. India has spent years strengthening its energy security by diversifying supplies and building resilience into its refining and distribution systems. Yet a disruption also exposes another, less discussed vulnerability: how societies behave under pressure. What happens when rumours trigger panic buying? When consumers begin stockpiling? Geopolitical tensions, digital dependence, artificial intelligence, interconnected supply chains, cloud infrastructure and human behaviour are increasingly converging to create risks that cannot always be understood through conventional security monitoring alone. An organisation may successfully detect an attack and still fail to recognise the wider conditions that made it vulnerable. In this episode of Currents and Chronicles, I look at cybersecurity from a broader risk perspective—moving beyond individual incidents to examine the environment in which those incidents emerge. India’s original Swadeshi movement demonstrated that everyday economic choices could become instruments of national purpose. But a twenty-first-century version of Swadeshi cannot simply be about rejecting foreign products or retreating behind protectionist walls. It has to be about building capability. In this episode of Currents and Chronicles, I explore what I call Swadeshi 2.0—a standards-first, skills-first and trust-first approach to strengthening Indian industry. The idea is not buy Indian regardless. It is something more demanding: create Indian products, services and institutions that earn preference through quality, reliability, security and value. Looking at lessons from countries such as Japan and Singapore, the episode examines how national competitiveness is built through quality systems, workforce capability, technological trust, certification, strong institutions and globally competitive supply chains. For India, the opportunity is particularly significant. A young workforce, expanding technological capability and a vast domestic market provide enormous advantages—but demographics alone do not create resilience.
