    Peter's Vision

In this evening sermon from Acts 10:9-23, Pastor Rockhill considers the vision God gave to the Apostle Peter upon the rooftop of Simon the Tanner. As Peter prays and grows hungry, he falls into a trance and beholds a great sheet let down from heaven filled with clean and unclean animals, hearing the command to rise, kill, and eat. Though Peter resists, the Lord declares three times that what God has cleansed he must not call common. Pastor Rockhill's central burden is to show how the Lord was preparing not only Cornelius but the church itself for the ingathering of the Gentiles. He explains that the vision overturns the Old Covenant dietary restrictions and the whole ceremonial system, for Christ has cleansed all defilement by his once-for-all sacrifice and has conquered the curse of death. The believer now enjoys true Christian liberty, receiving every good gift with thanksgiving to the glory of God. More than food is in view, however. Pastor Rockhill draws upon Ephesians 2 to declare that the middle wall of separation between Jew and Gentile has been broken down, so that the two are made one new man in Christ. What God has cleansed, no one may call common—including those once counted outside the covenant. Applying the text, Pastor Rockhill reminds the congregation that as the gospel expands, things change for good, as God gathers people from every nation, tribe, and tongue. He calls the saints to reflect this reconciling grace, receiving one another and showing hospitality as Peter welcomed the men sent from Cornelius.
