We venture into challenging territory and talk about Shyam Benegal's first film --- Ankur! Ankur is a 1974 film that is said to have heralded in the era of alternative cinema in the Hindi film industry. It stars Shabana Azmi and Anant Nag in lead roles. It tells the story of Lakshmi, a dalit woman who works at the house of Surya, an upper-caste, confused, young adult male. We talk about how the cinematorgraphy in the film is well ahead of its time, with some spectacular close-ups and motion shots. We also discuss how the writing, though discontinuous inparts, succeeds in covering a huge variety of themes in the rather measly runtime of two hours.  This and much more about this extremely interesting film in the podcast. 09/11/2020

Episode 15: Capernaum -- Childhood and (lack of) Innocence

This episode is the one we enjoyed recording the most! We talk about Capernaum, a 2018 Lebanese Arabic language film co-written and directed by Nadine Labaki, with the other writers being Jihad Hojeilly and Michelle Keserwany in collaboration with Georges Khabbaz and Khaled Mouzanar. Mouzanar also produced the film and did the background score. It stars Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw among others. We talk how the film takes a dark comedy premise and places it in a realist environment with much success. We also geek out about Labaki's direction and filmmaking method, which we were extremely inspired by. Lastly, we also talk of our own privileges and our lessons from the film in that context. Capernaum is streaming on Netflix -- go watch in right now; you won't regret. Spoiler Alert - This podcast contains a lot of nitty-gritty details from the film.
