Why Is There Pain And Suffering In The World? | Tough Questions

Pain and suffering are some of the hardest realities we face—and one of the most honest questions we can ask is: If God is good, why does so much pain exist? This message walks through six layers that help us process pain and suffering through a biblical lens. First, we start with God’s nature. Scripture is clear—God is good, and there is no darkness in Him (1 John 1:5). He does not cause evil or tempt people toward it (James 1:13–15). Even when life is painful, we can trust that God is for us, not against us (Romans 8:31). Second, God created laws that govern the world. There are natural consequences to actions, and we live within a system where cause and effect are real. Galatians 6 reminds us that we reap what we sow. Third, God gave humanity free will. Love requires choice, and with that comes the possibility of wrong decisions. From the very beginning, God has allowed people to choose—whether to follow Him or go their own way (Joshua 24:14–15). Fourth, we live in a broken, sin-filled world. Sin entered through humanity in Genesis 3, and ever since, the world has been marked by pain, injustice, and suffering. Not all suffering is directly tied to personal sin, but all suffering exists within a fallen world. Yet even in that brokenness, God is still at work. In John 9, Jesus makes it clear that hardship can become a platform for God’s power to be revealed. In Genesis 50:20, we see that what was meant for harm, God can use for good. Fifth, God gives us grace to get through. He doesn’t promise a pain-free life—but He does promise His presence and strength in the middle of it (2 Corinthians 12:9). And finally, we must acknowledge our limited understanding. God’s ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9). There are things we won’t fully understand on this side of eternity—but we can trust the character of God even when we don’t understand the circumstances. The hope we hold onto is this: pain is not the end of the story. Revelation 21:4 promises a day when God will wipe away every tear—when there will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain. 📖 Key Scriptures:1 John 1:5 (NLT) – God is light, no darkness in HimHebrews 12:11 (NLT) – Pain that produces growthJames 1:13–15 (NIV) – God does not temptRomans 8:31 (NLT) – God is for usGalatians 6:7–8 (NIV) – Reaping what we sowJoshua 24:14–15 (NLT) – The power of choiceJohn 9:1–3 (NLT) – God’s power revealed in sufferingGenesis 50:20 (NIV) – God works good from harm2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV) – Grace in weaknessIsaiah 55:8–9 (NLT) – God’s ways are higherRevelation 21:4 (NLT) – The end of pain This message doesn’t ignore pain—it gives us a framework to face it with faith, trust, and hope in a God who is still good, still present, and still at work. Are These The End Times | Tough Questions

In Week Three of Tough Questions, we tackle some of the most common—and often complicated—questions people have about faith, the Church, and how to live it out. Why are there so many different denominations? How do we grow a church without losing care for people? Can Christians be cremated? How do we hear God’s voice? Are we living in the end times? This message helps bring clarity by separating essentials from non-essentials. When it comes to denominations, many differences come down to polity (how churches are structured) and theology (how Scripture is interpreted). But at the core, the mission remains the same: Jesus’ command to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:18–20). The diversity of churches doesn’t have to divide us when we stay centered on that mission. As the Church grows, the challenge becomes balancing outreach with care. In Acts 2, we see a model of both—people being added daily while also being deeply connected through teaching, community, and prayer. Healthy growth requires both large gatherings and smaller, relational environments where people are truly known and cared for. Some questions are more about personal conviction than biblical command—like cremation. Scripture doesn’t give a direct mandate, which means believers can approach it as a matter of personal preference guided by wisdom and faith. When it comes to hearing God’s voice, it’s not about a single moment—it’s about consistent patterns. Consistent intake of God’s Word, consistent community, and consistently taking next steps all position us to better discern His voice in our lives. And what about the end times? Scripture makes it clear that difficult times will come (2 Timothy 3:1–5), and Jesus Himself spoke about future events (Luke 21:10–11). While there are many interpretations about timelines and details, the takeaway is not fear—it’s awareness and urgency, paired with trust and hope. Not every issue carries the same weight. Romans 14 reminds us to avoid arguing over non-essentials and instead focus on unity, grace, and love. At the end of the day, we are called to live differently—to be marked by compassion, humility, forgiveness, and love (Colossians 3:12–17). That’s what truly sets the Church apart. 📖 Key Scriptures:Matthew 28:18–20 (NLT) – The Great CommissionActs 2:40–42 (NLT) – The early church modelActs 20:20 (NIV) – Public and house-to-house ministryExodus 18:1–22 (NLT) – Delegation and structure2 Timothy 3:1–5 (NLT) – Signs of difficult timesLuke 21:10–11 (NIV) – Jesus on the futureRomans 14:1–3 (NLT) – Unity in differencesColossians 3:12–17 (MSG) – Living marked by love This message brings clarity to complex questions while pointing us back to what matters most—following Jesus and loving people well. What If They Never Hear of Jesus? | Tough Questions

One of the hardest and most emotional questions people ask is: What happens to those who never had the chance to accept Jesus? This message explores both the truth of Scripture and the heart of God. Jesus made it clear that He deeply loves people—especially those who are vulnerable, overlooked, or unable to fully understand. In Mark 10, when the disciples tried to keep children away, Jesus responded strongly: “Let the children come to me.” At the same time, Scripture is very clear that salvation comes through Jesus alone. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), and Acts 4:12 reminds us there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved. So how does God judge those who never had a full opportunity to hear? Romans 1 and Romans 2 point to two important truths: God has revealed Himself through creation, and He has written His moral law on the human heart. People may not know everything about God, but Scripture teaches that they can see evidence of Him through the world around them and through the conscience within them. Ultimately, we trust that God is perfectly loving, perfectly just, and perfectly fair. He sees every heart, every circumstance, and every opportunity in a way we never could. But this question is not just meant to make us wonder about others—it is meant to challenge us personally. If Jesus is the only way, then our responsibility is to help give people the chance to hear about Him. 📖 Key Scriptures:Mark 10:13–14 (NLT) – Let the children come to me1 Timothy 2:3–4 (NLT) – God wants everyone to be savedMatthew 25:34 (NLT) – Heaven prepared from the creation of the worldMatthew 25:41 (NLT) – Hell prepared for the devil and his demonsJohn 14:6 (NLT) – Jesus is the only wayActs 4:12 (NLT) – Salvation is found in no one elseRomans 2:14–15 (NLT) – God’s law written on the heartRomans 1:20 (NLT) – God revealed through creation Freedom Night is Friday, April 24th at the Alton Darby Campus at 6:30pm. Can I Trust The Bible | Tough Questions

Tough Questions – Week 1 | Can I Trust the Bible? Can the Bible really be trusted? Is it true? Is it reliable? At the core of Christianity are two defining questions: What do you believe is true—and how do you respond to Jesus Christ and the Bible? In this message, we take an honest look at the credibility of Scripture and why millions of people build their lives on it. The Bible is not just one book—it’s a collection of 66 books written over 1,500 years by 40 different authors, across 3 continents and in 3 different languages… yet it tells one unified story centered on Jesus. That level of consistency and cohesion points to something far greater than human effort alone. Scripture itself declares its purpose: to teach truth, correct us, and equip us to live the life God has called us to (2 Timothy 3:16–17). But beyond that claim, we see powerful evidence supporting its reliability. From textual accuracy—with thousands of ancient manuscripts showing remarkable consistency—to historical and archaeological confirmation through over 25,000 discoveries, the Bible continues to stand the test of time. Discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls have only strengthened confidence in how accurately Scripture has been preserved. The formation of the Bible, through early church leaders and councils like Hippo and Carthage, as well as translations like the Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate, and eventually the King James Version, show a careful and intentional process to preserve and share God’s Word across generations and cultures. But the strongest evidence may be personal transformation. Jesus said that when we remain in His Word, we will know the truth—and that truth will set us free (John 8:30–32). For centuries, lives have been changed, hearts restored, and purpose discovered through the power of Scripture. This message invites you to move beyond surface-level assumptions and take a deeper look at the Bible—not just as a historical document, but as the living Word of God. 📖 Key Scriptures:2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NLT) – All Scripture is inspired by God2 Peter 1:19–21 (NIV) – Prophecy and divine inspirationJohn 8:30–32 (NLT) – The truth will set you free If you’ve ever wrestled with doubts or questions about the Bible, this is a conversation worth leaning into. This Is Love That Seeks You Out First

Easter is more than a moment—it’s a defining point. A new beginning. A powerful reminder that hope is alive because Jesus is alive. In this message, we look at two very different, yet deeply personal, face-to-face encounters with the resurrected Christ: Thomas and Mary Magdalene.Thomas wrestled with doubt. Even after walking closely with Jesus, he needed to see and touch to believe. But when he finally encountered the risen Savior, everything changed. His doubt turned into one of the most powerful declarations of faith: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Jesus reminds us that while seeing may strengthen belief, there is a special blessing for those who choose faith even when they cannot see.Mary’s encounter was deeply emotional and personal. In a moment of grief and confusion, Jesus simply called her name—“Mary”—and everything shifted. Her sorrow turned into purpose as she became one of the first to proclaim, “I have seen the Lord!” (John 20:18).These encounters remind us that Jesus meets us right where we are—whether we’re filled with doubt, grief, questions, or longing. And when we truly encounter Him, it changes everything.Easter is an invitation:A new beginning.A renewed hope.A personal encounter with the risen Jesus. No matter your past or your present, God’s promise still stands: He has a future and a hope for you (Jeremiah 29:11–13).📖 Key Scriptures:John 11:16 (NLT) – Thomas’ loyalty and struggleJohn 14:4–6 (NLT) – Jesus is the way, the truth, and the lifeJohn 20:27–29 (NIV) – From doubt to beliefJohn 20:16–18 (NLT) – Mary encounters the risen JesusJeremiah 29:11–13 (NLT) – God’s promise of hope and a futureThis Easter message invites you to move from doubt to belief, from grief to purpose, and from searching to seeing.Cypress Church, located in Columbus, Ohio, is a vibrant, welcoming church dedicated to helping lead people to Christ and provide steps to follow after him. Flipping The Script On Loving Your Neighbor | Face To Face

In Week 5 of Face to Face, Jesus is asked a question that still challenges us today:“Who is my neighbor?” In Luke 10, an expert in religious law tries to test Jesus. He already knows the right answer — love God and love people — but he wants to justify his actions. So Jesus responds with a story. A man is beaten, robbed, and left for dead on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest sees him… and passes by. A Temple assistant sees him… and passes by. Then comes a Samaritan — someone culturally despised and rejected — and he stops. He helps. He shows compassion. He pays the cost. At the end of the story, Jesus flips the question. Not “Who qualifies as my neighbor?” but…“Who acted like a neighbor?” The answer is clear: “The one who showed him mercy.”And Jesus responds: “Go and do the same.” “Who is my neighbor?”Answer: Everybody. Culture often asks: Who is against me so I can bury them?Jesus asks: Who is against me so I can bless them? If we’re going to love people the way Jesus calls us to, we need to ask three important questions: 1) What is their worldview?Everyone sees life through a lens shaped by beliefs, values, and experiences. 1 Corinthians 5 reminds us that we are called to engage the world, not isolate from it — while also holding believers to a different standard. Understanding someone’s worldview helps us respond with wisdom, not just reaction. 2) Do I have a relationship?Romans 2:4 shows us that it’s God’s kindness that leads people to repentance. Real influence flows through real relationship. People are far more open to truth when it comes through trust. 3) Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to work?John 16 reminds us that conviction is the role of the Holy Spirit — not ours. Our job is to love, to show mercy, and to create space for God to move in people’s hearts. Loving your neighbor isn’t always easy. It’s often inconvenient. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable. But it’s always the way of Jesus. When we come face to face with Him, we’re not just called to believe differently — we’re called to love differently. Love That Says I See You | Face To Face

In Week 4 of Face to Face, we step into a powerful and emotional moment where Jesus is invited to dinner by a Pharisee named Simon. What unfolds at that table reveals the difference between religion and relationship… between perception and truth. While Jesus is eating, a woman known in the city for her sinful life enters the room. She brings an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, kneels at Jesus’ feet, and begins to weep. Her tears fall on His feet, and she wipes them with her hair, kissing them and pouring perfume over them.To some, this moment looks inappropriate. To Jesus, it looks like worship.Simon, the Pharisee, immediately judges the situation. In his mind, if Jesus were truly a prophet, He would reject this woman. But Jesus, knowing his thoughts, tells a story about two people forgiven of debts — one large, one small. Then He asks a simple question: Who will love more?Simon answers correctly: the one forgiven the greater debt. And Jesus makes it clear — this woman understands something Simon does not.Three Key Takeaways from this Encounter:1. Our perception shapes how we see ourselves. In 1 Timothy 1:13–15, Paul reflects on his past and calls himself the worst of sinners — yet celebrates the mercy and grace he received. When we truly understand what we’ve been forgiven from, it produces humility and gratitude, not shame.2. Our perception shapes how we see others.Simon saw a sinner. Jesus saw a daughter.Simon saw a problem. Jesus saw a person. The way we view others reveals the condition of our own heart.3. Understand proportional living.2 Corinthians 9:6–8 teaches that what we sow determines what we reap. The woman gave extravagantly because she understood the depth of her forgiveness.Forgiven much = loves much.Forgiven little = loves little. This moment isn’t just about her story — it’s about ours. When we truly grasp the grace we’ve been given, our natural response is worship, generosity, and love.At the end of the encounter, Jesus speaks directly to her:“Your sins are forgiven… your faith has saved you; go in peace.”What others labeled her by, Jesus released her from. And when you come face to face with Jesus, He does the same for you.Cypress Church, located in Columbus, Ohio, is a vibrant, welcoming church dedicated to helping lead people to Christ and provide steps to follow after him. The Danger Of Getting Comfortable With What Is Breaking You

Do You Want to Be Healed? In Week 3 of Face to Face, we encounter one of the most surprising questions Jesus ever asked. In John 5:6, Jesus meets a man who had been unable to walk for thirty-eight years. Seeing him lying there, Jesus asks what seems like an obvious question: “Do you want to get well?”At first, the question almost feels unnecessary. Of course he wants to be healed… right? But Jesus understood something about the human heart. Over time, people can become comfortable with the very things that are hurting them. We adapt, we adjust, and eventually we settle into patterns that were never meant to define our lives.Sometimes people want relief, but they don’t actually want change. They want comfort without the disruption that transformation requires. Real healing always moves us forward. It calls us out of the familiar patterns we’ve managed for years and invites us into a new way of living. That’s why the question Jesus asked then is still the question He asks today:Do you want to be healed? Are you open to new territory in your relationship with Christ, or have you become comfortable managing the life you currently live?Part of real healing often involves accountability. But biblical accountability isn’t about shaming or condemning people. It’s about calling people up, not just calling them out.Real love refuses to stand by while someone drifts away from the life God has for them. Instead, it steps in with encouragement, truth, and support so that people can rise into who God created them to be.Proverbs 24:16 reminds us that even the righteous fall — sometimes repeatedly. But the difference is that they rise again.Healing doesn’t mean you never fall. It means you refuse to stay down. When Jesus meets us face to face, He invites us into something better — but it requires a decision: Are we willing to leave the familiar behind and step into the life He offers?Cypress Church, located in Columbus, Ohio, is a vibrant, welcoming church dedicated to helping lead people to Christ and provide steps to follow after him.
