    Today in History: King Jeroboam made up a new festival, similar to Sukkot (Tabernacles) in Jerusalem, so no one would leave his kingdom to go to Jerusalem (see 1 Kings 12:27–33). The day that Matityahu the Maccabee died (according to tradition, see the historical book 1 Maccabees 2:70). Before World War II, on November 9, 1938, the German Nazis attacked Jewish homes, stores, and synagogues.
