    DOD83: Self-Defense II

So this is a return to a conversation, because Thomas spoke to Lydia about the self-defense and carrying a weapon discussion and the Smiths have a completely different view than the other dads on this one. PLUS, no, the US is NOT the 10th most dangerous nation for women...

After disclosing some serious friendship-ending habits, Eli shares breaking news and the dads discuss processing diagnoses and not-diagnoses, as well as navigating resources and advocating for their kids. Also, Tom regularly pulls the Mean Girls conference call tactic with insurance companies and healthcare providers. BUT IT WORKS.

DOD81: Should We Teach Our Kids Self-Defense?

DOD81: Should We Teach Our Kids Self-Defense?

Tom's son recently asked him to teach him to fight. That's definitely a lot for any dad to process, and brings up a whole host of questions and thoughts and feelings. The dads work through some of that, and also Eli tells us about his nunchucks.

    DOD79: Bragging About Your Kids

Tom's ice skate tying debacle from the bonus story last episode (make sure you are a patron so you don't miss these!) inspired a whole episode. Is bragging about your kids good? Bad? What qualifies as bragging? How much kid talk is too much?

DOD78: Gentle Parenting Versus... Not That

Let's talk authoritarian parents. The Toms probably had them. Eli definitely didn't. Is it bad? What's gentle parenting and why does it mean Eli has lost several eyes and a couple noses to Max attacks? Is he going to stick with it or explode under the emotional pressure?

An Amazing Show!

A great show for positive masculinity; whether you’re a dad or not, you get a great discussion each episode. It’s made me examine how toxic I was brought up and basically I feel like Thomas’s dad and my own shared the exact same parenting styles.

The only negative is the “auto ads” Eli jokes about being so bad. And yeah, my record is SEVENTEEN ads out of nowhere in a 50 minute podcast. Depending on how many pop up in the free feed, some episodes are almost unlistenable.

Funny, but annoying

Hosts are extremely funny, but I had to unsubscribe. This last episode of hand-wringing about teaching a child how to defend themselves from a hypothetical attack left me cold. Tom sounded honestly unhinged. He is clearly not thinking rationally about the risk of a violent encounter in America (low). The show hits its sweet spot when they are just cracking jokes. Also, one of the hosts casually mentioned that their nine year old can’t read. That sounds like a parenting challenge that would be worth talking about, instead of wasting two episodes of arguing about increasing implausible scenarios involving your child being attacked.

Must-listen for progressive dads

Eli is the funniest person in podcasting and has no ego. Tom is Ron Swanson but liberal. Thomas is somewhere in between and often uses the podcast to process his painful upbringing, which usually works. The three of them can sometimes drag each other so far left that it approaches “apologizing for being a white male” territory, but as long as it’s supported with quality discourse I’m here for it. Their parenting stories are funny, raw, entertaining, and great jumping-off points for discussion. They’ve done a great job with this podcast from the jump.
