Wildfires and the Race to Reforest

Across North America and beyond, wildfires are burning across larger areas and with greater severity. In some places, the damage is so extensive that forests which once regenerated naturally may no longer recover on their own. Losing these forests means losing much more than trees. Forests provide clean water, habitat, biodiversity, carbon storage and other essential ecological services. But restoring them is more complicated than planting seedlings. It requires appropriate seeds, nursery capacity, skilled labor and, ultimately, the money to make it all possible. In the second episode of Decenter, I speak with Grant Canary, founder and CEO of Mast Reforestation, about the growing gap between the forests we’re losing and our capacity to restore them. We discuss the ecological consequences of increasingly severe wildfires, how climate change complicates forest restoration, and the seed shortages and industrial constraints limiting reforestation at scale. We also explore Mast’s evolution from drone-based tree planting to an integrated restoration business, the economics of rebuilding forests, and whether carbon markets and new approaches to carbon removal can provide the financing needed to restore damaged landscapes. In this episode 00:00 — Wildfires and the reforestation challenge Why increasingly severe wildfires are creating a growing gap between forest destruction and our capacity to restore ecosystems. 01:59 — What we lose when forests burn Forests as essential infrastructure, providing clean water, air filtration, biodiversity and other ecosystem services. 05:41 — Why forests aren’t regenerating naturally The difference between low- and high-severity fires, and why some landscapes may struggle to recover. 09:24 — The difficulties of replanting forests Dangerous terrain, fire-damaged timber, logistical constraints and the high cost of restoration. 15:28 — Climate change and choosing the right trees Seed zones, local adaptation and the challenge of restoring forests in a changing climate. 18:06 — The science and economics of collecting seeds Mast events, unpredictable seed production and the difficulty of maintaining sufficient seed inventories. 21:27 — How squirrels help reforestation Silva Seed’s unusual approach to collecting cones from squirrel caches and supporting local economies. 23:20 — Growing seedlings for different ecosystems How nurseries prepare seedlings and why planting strategies depend on local environmental conditions. 24:48 — The growing reforestation gap Shortages of seeds, nursery capacity, labour and financing as wildfire destruction increases. 29:57 — From drones to integrated reforestation Why Mast moved beyond automated tree planting to address deeper problems across the restoration supply chain. 33:14 — Restoring forests in practice A Montana restoration project illustrates the operational and economic challenges facing landowners. About Grant Canary Grant Canary is the founder and CEO of Mast Reforestation, a company focused on restoring forests affected by wildfires. Mast works across the reforestation supply chain, from collecting and processing seeds to growing seedlings, planting trees and developing financing mechanisms for forest restoration. Grant’s work focuses on overcoming the ecological, operational and economic barriers to restoring forests at scale. About Emil Davityan Emil Davityan is the founder and host of Decenter. AI and the Future of Energy

Artificial intelligence may feel like a digital technology, but underneath it sits an expanding physical system of data centers, electricity generation, transmission infrastructure, batteries, land and natural resources. As AI scales, its demand for electricity is colliding with an energy system that moves at a very different speed. Data centers can be built relatively quickly; new generation, transmission and grid connections can take years. In the first episode of Decenter, I speak with Darian Parrish, founder and CEO of PwrOn, about the relationship between AI and energy, and whether the enormous new demand created by AI could ultimately accelerate a shift toward a more distributed energy system. We discuss data centers and grid constraints, behind-the-meter power, distributed energy resources and virtual power plants, EVs as an enormous source of underused battery capacity, edge computing, and what it might mean to build an energy system capable of supporting the AI age. In this episode 00:00 — AI Meets the Physical World Why the AI revolution ultimately depends on physical infrastructure, energy and resources. 02:50 — Where AI Goes Next How AI adoption could spread beyond knowledge work and into increasingly complex parts of the economy. 09:05 — AI, Jobs and Displacement Automation, technological transitions and the question of who captures the economic benefits of AI. 16:03 — AI’s Growing Energy Demand Why the rapid expansion of AI and data centers is creating enormous new demand for electricity. 22:01 — Why the Grid Can’t Keep Up Grid constraints, interconnection delays and the mismatch between the speed of technological development and energy infrastructure. 24:05 — Powering Data Centers Off-Grid Behind-the-meter generation and the potential for data centers to secure power without relying entirely on the existing grid. 27:09 — The Future Energy Mix Renewables, fossil fuels and why storage is becoming increasingly important to the energy transition. 29:55 — Distributed Energy Explained How distributed energy resources could shift electricity generation and storage away from a purely centralized model. 35:32 — How Virtual Power Plants Work Connecting batteries, solar, EVs and other distributed resources into coordinated energy networks. 38:14 — Creating a Market for Energy How households and asset owners could potentially monetize their batteries and other energy resources. 43:13 — Edge Computing Meets Energy What happens when computing becomes more distributed—and moves closer to where energy is available. 46:32 — Batteries and the Future of Power Battery technology, energy density, EVs as an enormous underused storage resource, portable power and the possibility of building a more flexible energy network. About Darian Parrish Darian Parrish is a technology entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of PwrOn, where he is building infrastructure for a more distributed energy system. His work sits at the intersection of energy, software and emerging technology, with a particular focus on portable power, distributed energy resources and the infrastructure needed to move and coordinate energy where it is needed. About Emil Davityan Emil Davityan is the founder and host of Decenter. He is a successful technology founder, former political advisor and writer. His work focuses on the intersection of technology, ecology and political economy, with a particular interest in how emerging technologies are reshaping the systems that underpin modern life.
