Send us a text Ronald M. Krauss joins the show for a practical, myth-busting deep dive into cardiometabolic risk, lipidology, and why the LDL conversation is often framed in the wrong direction. Building on his long-standing advisory-level relationship with Dr. Urban and his “disruptor” approach to improving outcomes, Dr. Krauss clarifies the critical difference between LDL and LDL cholesterol, uses a memorable “bus cholesterol” analogy to explain particle number vs. cholesterol content, and ties the real risk story back to metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. We tackle why simplistic nutrition rules break down in real physiology, including why “eat the whole egg” can be appropriate in context, where resistance to updated science comes from, and what makes Lp(a) uniquely damaging. Dr. Krauss shares how studying his own family sharpened his perspective on genetic risk, prevention, and what actually moves the needle for heart health. Ronald M. Krauss, M.D., is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at UCSF, Dolores Jordan Endowed Chair at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, and Adjunct Professor of Nutritional Sciences at UC Berkeley. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees with honors from Harvard, trained in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital (Harvard Medical Service), and served as a Clinical Associate and Senior Investigator at the NHLBI Molecular Disease Branch in Bethesda. Dr. Krauss is board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology & metabolism, and lipidology, and is a recognized leader in cardiometabolic health and atherosclerosis research. He has held major national leadership roles, including serving on the American Heart Association National Board of Directors, the U.S. National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel, and as founding Chair of the AHA Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health. He has also served on National Academy of Medicine committees focused on dietary macronutrients and chronic disease biomarkers. He has authored 500+ peer-reviewed publications with 195,000+ citations (h-index 161), and is widely known for identifying the “atherogenic dyslipidemia” triad—high triglycerides, low HDL, and increased small, dense LDL—linked to insulin resistance, abdominal adiposity, and elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as advancing widely used methods for lipoprotein particle analysis.
