What If Everything You Call ‘Me’ Is Changing?

If Everything About You Changes, Then Who Are You? Your body changes. Your thoughts change. Your emotions change. Your opinions change. Even your personality can change. And yet, through all of it, you keep saying: “This is me.” So what exactly is this “me”? In this episode of Decoding U, we explore the ancient 25-tattva framework, not as a list of philosophical concepts, but as a map of your own experience. We look at the difference between Puruṣa, the Seer, and Prakṛti, the changing field of experience, and then trace the layers in between: Buddhi, Ahaṃkāra, Manas, the senses, faculties of action, subtle sensory qualities, and the five elements. More importantly, we bring the map into something very human: What happens inside you when someone criticises you, rejects you, or hurts you? You hear something. The mind interprets it. The sense of “I” makes it personal. An impulse appears. And suddenly an experience becomes an identity: “This happened to me.” “This is because of me.” “This is who I am.” What if you could actually see that process happening? This episode is an invitation to look more closely at the difference between what is changing and what is aware of that change. No belief required. Just observation. Question to live with: What in me is changing and what is aware of the change? This episode completes our foundation before we begin exploring Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras, one sūtra at a time. Why Do You React Before You Even Think?

Have you ever reacted to something and only afterwards wondered, “Why did I react like that?” Someone says something. You hear it. Then your mind interprets it. It becomes personal. An emotion rises. And before you know it, you’ve already reacted. But what if that reaction isn’t actually one thing? What if different parts of your inner world are doing different things before you even become aware of the reaction? In this episode of Decoding U, we explore an ancient framework that maps the mind into different functions - including Manas, Ahaṃkāra, and Buddhi. Not as complicated philosophical concepts to memorize, but as a way of understanding what happens inside you when you overthink, feel hurt, become defensive, take criticism personally, or react before you’ve really thought about what happened. You’ll explore: • What happens between an event and your reaction • Why the mind can interpret something before you consciously examine it • How the sense of “I” makes experiences feel personal • Why the ego may not be the enemy we think it is • What Buddhi - discernment and wise judgment, actually does • And how observing these different processes can create a pause between what happens and what you do next The interesting question isn't only, “Why did I react?” It is: “What happened before I became the story?” Welcome to Decoding U - a space where timeless wisdom helps us make sense of modern life. If You Can Observe Your Thoughts, Who Are You? The Seer and the Seen

You say, “I’m anxious.” You say, “I’m angry.” You say, “I’m confused.” But if you can notice your thoughts, emotions, sensations, and reactions, who is noticing them? In this episode of Decoding U, we explore a powerful distinction from an ancient Indian philosophical tradition: the Seer and the Seen. Everything you experience is constantly changing- your thoughts, emotions, body, memories, personality, and even your sense of “I. But what is aware of all these changes? Rather than asking you to believe an idea, this episode invites you to investigate it directly. What happens when you stop saying “I am anxious” and begin noticing “anxiety is present”? What happens when you can experience an emotion completely without allowing it to define who you are? And could there be a difference between what you experience and that which is aware of the experience? We'll explore this through the simple image of a cinema screen and the movie playing upon it and bring the inquiry into situations you actually encounter: criticism, success, failure, fear, anxiety, and emotional reactions. This isn't about suppressing emotions or becoming detached from life. It's about learning to observe what is happening within you without immediately becoming it I'm Jyoti Khatri, and this is Decoding U - A space where timeless wisdom helps us make sense of modern life. A question to carry with you: What is changing within me right now and what is aware of that change?

The Two Choices That Quietly Shape Your Life

Every day, we make hundreds of choices. Some are obvious. Most are so small that we barely notice them. But what if those ordinary decisions are quietly shaping the direction of our lives? In this episode of Decoding U, we explore a timeless teaching from the Katha Upanishad that invites us to recognise the difference between what feels good in the moment and what truly serves our long-term growth and well-being. This isn't about rejecting pleasure or making life harder than it needs to be. It's about learning to pause, notice, and ask a deeper question before making our next meaningful decision. Today's enquiry: Before your next important decision, pause for five seconds and ask: "Am I choosing immediate comfort or lasting benefit?" You don't have to believe anything you hear. Simply notice whether it matches your own experience. Traditional teaching from the Katha Upanishad: This episode explores Katha Upanishad 1.2.1–2, where Yama describes the two paths that appear before every person: Preyas (the immediately pleasant) and Shreyas (the truly beneficial). The teaching reminds us that wisdom begins with recognising the difference before making a choice.
