    004. Leaving the High School Classroom Wasn't My Choice

    006. Gateway Activities for your Next Unit!

    In this episode, I'm breaking down three types of gateway activities you can actually use in a high school classroom What we cover: The Simulation — how to immerse students in the world of your unit. I talk about what @wellhelloitsmarie does for her Gatsby unit! The Era Party — students discover a moment in time through newspapers, primary sources, and people at table stations. The difference between this and a Simulation: students do the discovering through a scavenger-hunt style activity. The Mirror — my personal favorite. This is where you put the past and the present side by side and let students make the connection without being told what to think. I walk through my French Revolution station activity, where my stations put liberty caps next to Katniss Everdeen, revolutionary pamphlets next to Childish Gambino lyrics.     007. 10 Minute Training on High School Classroom Management

    Episode Summary In this episode, we're getting real about classroom management — the hardest part of teaching that nobody fully prepares you for. The biggest mindset shift? Build your systems for your worst days, not your best ones. The goal is predictable routines that hold up even when you're running on three hours of sleep and a full inbox. We walk through the Checklist across three areas: For the Teacher — how to structure your unit and weekly planning, simplify your grading decisions, set up parent communication templates (including a weekly positive note habit), and use instructional videos to protect your energy all semester long. For Students — creating one consistent place for due dates and missed work, simplifying your turn-in process, locking in your late work policy before the semester starts, and setting up materials and early finisher options that don't require you. For the Classroom — building a reliable entry warm-up, defining what independent work actually looks and sounds like, closing class with intention, and being meticulous about your phone policy before it gets away from you.
