    Standing alone takes courage.

Every once in a while, we come across individuals that, in the face of adversity, have the strength and the fortitude to stand alone and do what they morally think is right, even when the folks around them are going in the opposite direction.

That is what has inspired this podcast episode.

Listen to this episode for my perspective on moral courage, standing up for what’s right, how you can think about courage and exemplifying courage in the workplace.

And if you’re listening to this episode on Apple Podcasts, I’d appreciate it if you could leave us a 5-star review. It helps people decide to listen to the show.

#25 Dr. Pauline Elwin on transformational leadership

There’s only ONE leadership style that works in a crisis.

This week, on the Defining YOU podcast, Dr. Pauline Elwin shares her research on how transformational leadership was the ONLY leadership style to impact workplaces positively during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But what is transformational leadership? And what characteristics define this style of a leader?

Listen to this week’s episode to learn about the special skills transformational leaders have, what kind of leadership traits can be learned, and how organizations can develop dynamic leaders to survive turbulent times.

Plus, hear Dr. Elwin’s backstory as the first Caribbean-born woman to defend her dissertation at Northwest University successfully and how she was inspired to pursue her doctorate after advocating on behalf of government workers and DEI initiatives in Seattle.

And I’m excited to say that this is my 25th episode of Defining YOU!

#24 Dianne Wilkerson wants to serve again — here’s why

#24 Dianne Wilkerson wants to serve again — here’s why

Everyone wants to know why Dianne Wilkerson is getting back into politics.

She was the first Black woman to serve as a state senator in Massachusetts. She represented Black Bostonians for 15 years and resigned after she was caught accepting bribe money.

Wilkerson spent three years in jail and has since worked to regain the trust of the community by continuing to serve. She’s been involved in governance issues at the Boston Public Schools board, economic equity for the city’s Black and Brown residents, and the COVID-19 response.

It’s the latter that has inspired her to run for the Senate seat in the 2nd Suffolk District.

“We know we needed to have a place where our people would feel comfortable to go to get vaccine,” Wilkerson told me. “What I learned in the process is we were calling, doing wellness checks on our seniors. They said, ‘I have the vaccine. I don't have any food. I have vaccine. I don't, I don't have money for a copay. I lost my job.’

“And so we realized this was about more than COVID. It was about how the government with all of its resources still can't figure out ways to respond to our people. And when we went to the people who are elected to deliver those resources, we didn't get a response.”

This week on the Defining You podcast, Dianne Wilkerson gives her candid perspective on what went wrong when she was convicted of bribery, how she has sought to serve the community, and who is inspiring her today.

Listen to this episode to understand the Dianne Wilkerson story, her  background and what motivates her to seek out public service, and how you might find a way to serve in your community, too.

#23 Using journaling to address trauma with Alicia Adamson

#23 Using journaling to address trauma with Alicia Adamson

Your unaddressed trauma is holding you back!
Doing the hard work of dealing with past trauma and building emotional intelligence is not easy.
Your trauma shows up in every aspect of your life, including the workplace, romantic relationships, and how you see yourself in your community.
But if you leave your trauma unaddressed, you risk failing to live up to your own potential and carrying the weight of those past negative experiences with you.
There are many ways to tackle trauma, including through therapy, but one of the tools you can use to unburden yourself and find peace is by journaling. That’s Alicia Adamson’s specialty.
Alicia is the executive director of the Brookline Teen Center, where she focuses on helping young people reach their full potential. She’s also the author of “Walking In Your Truth: A Personal Journal To Reflect On Your Life’s Purpose.”
This week, Alicia shares on the Defining YOU podcast how she teaches others to use journaling as a tool for self-discovery, healing, and empowerment. And she shares her own story of how journaling saved her from self-destruction.
“I didn't want to have self-doubt or low self-esteem,” Alicia told me. “I didn't want to admit that validation from other people was really the fuel to self-love versus, oh no, I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. And believing that in my own soul and then letting that grow into what my self-love looks like. That took me a long time to unpack that.”
Listen to hear how journaling, therapy, and faith have motivated Alicia to unlock her best self and how you can too.
Do you journal? Let me know in the comments. And if you’re listening on Apple Podcasts, please head over to the reviews section and leave a 5-star review. It really helps others find the show. Thank you!
