Did you know the light we live with every day affects everything from how we sleep to how much we enjoy our food to whether or not we can see the stars at night?
Most people don’t think about light every day, but I do. That’s why I started Delivered Lumens, a monthly podcast where I talk to experts ranging from designers to scientists to advocates about the power of light and how to make the best light in your life.

Sustainable Lighting with Leela Shanker of the Green Light Alliance
The word sustainability has become loaded with baggage. So let's reframe it a little bit because what Leela and I really talked about was the future of the lighting industry and light in people's lives. The future we want, one with much less waste, less carbon, and mitigated climate change, will only come if all of the stakeholders in the design and building industry are working toward it.
That's why I'm so excited to have Leela Shanker on the show. Leela Shanker is a lighting designer first and foremost, but she is also a vocal champion and leader in the world of sustainability. Leela is part of the Green Light Alliance, and in this episode of the podcast, we talk about sustainability.
Leela and I start with the nuts and bolts of the GLA Incubator project, which is gathering baseline carbon data for the lighting industry, but then the conversation really shifts outward into best practices of design, maintenance, the life cycle of products, end-of-life and how we need to think differently about the built environment.
But then what we really discuss is the future of lighting and the built environment.

Why Light is Crucial for Your Health and Well-Being
Mariana Figueiro, a renowned scientist and director of the Light and Health Research Center at Mount Sinai, talks about the importance of light in human health. Figueiro explains that exposure to light, especially natural light, is crucial for regulating our circadian rhythms, which in turn affects our sleep, mood, and overall well-being. She also discusses the impact of artificial light on our health and sleep patterns. Throughout the interview, Figueiro provides practical tips on optimizing our exposure to light for better health outcomes, including recommendations on light levels, timing, and the use of light-emitting devices. We also delve into the differences between circadian entrainment and alertness, how pop science misses the nuances of light and health, and how inequity makes achieving healthy light (and darkness) difficult.

Mini-Episode: Lighting and Skin Tone Recap
This month I was fortunate to host a conversation on Lighting and Skin Tone for the IES NYC and Equity in lighting. In this mini episode, I walk through some of the takeaways I learned from hosting the panel. Including the concepts of fidelity versus preference, what theatrical lighting can teach us and what we need to do going forward .
