Delivered Lumens

Did you know the light we live with every day affects everything from how we sleep to how much we enjoy our food to whether or not we can see the stars at night? Most people don’t think about light every day, but I do. That’s why I started Delivered Lumens, a monthly podcast where I talk to experts ranging from designers to scientists to advocates about the power of light and how to make the best light in your life.

Why Light is Crucial for Your Health and Well-Being

Mariana Figueiro, a renowned scientist and director of the Light and Health Research Center at Mount Sinai, talks about the importance of light in human health. Figueiro explains that exposure to light, especially natural light, is crucial for regulating our circadian rhythms, which in turn affects our sleep, mood, and overall well-being. She also discusses the impact of artificial light on our health and sleep patterns. Throughout the interview, Figueiro provides practical tips on optimizing our exposure to light for better health outcomes, including recommendations on light levels, timing, and the use of light-emitting devices. We also delve into the differences between circadian entrainment and alertness, how pop science misses the nuances of light and health, and how inequity makes achieving healthy light (and darkness) difficult. What is Light in the Metaverse?

For the very first episode of the Delivered Lumens podcast, I’m joined by Erin McDannald, the CEO of Lighting Environments. Erin is one of the most forward-thinking leaders in the lighting industry. What she understands more than many is how important the role of technology is not just in our buildings but in our culture. More than simply understanding it, Erin is putting that understanding into practice. As you’ll hear in the episode, Erin will explain that lighting is the natural building layer to support the internet of things in the built environment. That’s why she’s invested so heavily in lighting controls through the development of the LE app, designed to make control of lighting, along with other building systems more intuitive and complete. But Erin’s interest in the merger of light and technology goes beyond lighting controls and takes us into the metaverse. Erin walks us through digital twinning, using gaming environments to interact with virtual spaces, and how these virtual spaces will enhance the value of our real spaces. Along the way, we touch on the pandemic, the effects of light on health, and why we need to have a more sophisticated understanding of our working environments if we’re going to grow the value of light in the future. Welcome to the Delivered Lumens Podcast (Intro)

Did you know, the light we live with every day affects everything from how we sleep, to how much we enjoy our food, to whether or not we can see the stars at night? Most people don’t think about light everyday, but I do. That’s why I started Delivered Lumens, a monthly podcast where I talk to experts including designers, to scientists, to advocates about the power of light and how to make the best light in your life. My name is JP Bedell. In my career, I’ve been a lighting designer for theatrical productions, live events, extremely high-end homes and global retail chains. Today, my day job is helping some of the best architectural lighting designers in New York City choose the products that will help them realize their visions. So what is Delivered Lumens? Delivered Lumens started as a blog, and newsletter to supplement my in-person efforts. Then 2020 happened, and all of the sudden it was really important to have ways to communicate digitally. I went all in on producing blog posts, newsletters and videos to help my designers. One of the neat side effects of us all being forced to work remotely is how many new voices within the industry I got to hear from daily in my social feeds. The more I watched and participated in the conversation, the more I realized the lighting industry needed to broaden its reach. We do a really good job talking to one another about what light can do, But we don’t do enough to explain the value of light to people outside of our industry. This is what brings you to the podcast currently filling your ears. My goal for the Delivered Lumens podcast is simple. Explain the value of light through interviews and discussions with people who move my industry forward. In the coming months, I’ll be hosting conversations about topics like: What does light mean in the metaverse? How does artificial light affect our health? How can darker skies improve the quality of life not only for wildlife but for humans? And so many more. I’ll be putting out one full-length episode a month. You can subscribe to this feed for the audio version. You can also subscribe to Delivered Lumens on YouTube for the video podcast, which will include visuals to go along with the discussion.
