Development, Doctrinal and Scriptural: Biblical Theology Series 03

Anyone who talks about Newman as much as these two Gents do will inevitably talk about his theory of the Development of Doctrine. But what if this pivotal theory by the recent Doctor of the Church not only gives new perspectives on approaching Scripture, but is made more sense of by looking toward Scripture to help make sense of it? That's what the guys set about doing in today's episode, and have time to declare a pox of both houses that make abstract what must always be concrete about the Faith and Life of the Church.  Listen Live · Program Schedule · Our Stations LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Tiktok! Economy, Divine and Human: Biblical Theology Series 02

Our Biblical Theology series keeps rolling along, and this time, the boys take on something that gets everyone's blood pressure boiling: economics. What are the ways the current usage of the word obscures both a deeper theological meaning of the term AND the way money/lending/exchange, etc. are understood in Scripture? What are the ways that Scripture forces us to reconsider how we understand wealth in our communities and in our personal lives? This and more right here on UCG! Prophecy, Prediction, and the Power of God's Word: Biblical Theology Series 01

Starting a new series on "Biblical Theology," the boys briefly discuss what that means (over against "scriptural studies" on one hand or "theology" more generally on the other--shout out to Benedict XVI!), and then dive into their first subject: Prophecy. What are contemporary misunderstandings, how can a fuller account help us understand Scripture better, and how does the Scriptural vision of Prophecy help us make sense of things here and now (and yes, both Fatima Secrets and Algorithms make guest appearances!)  Listen Live · Program Schedule · Our Stations LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Tiktok! Answering the Call: Scripture and How We Answer God's Voice

Bud is the lecturer for his local Knights of Columbus chapter, and he had a reflection on how we answer the call of God, based on the lives of saints in Scripture. We dive into the idea of what makes us weary to answer the particular callings in our life, and what temptations allow us to ignore the call or transform it in ways that go against the very act of the call itself. Your Life Is Not About You: Service, Suffering & Faith with Joe Stopulos - 06/20/2026

In this Father's Day episode, Dr. Bud Marr hosts solo while co-host Bo Bonner travels through Europe, welcoming back an Uncommon Good "all-star": Joe Stopulos, host of the Man Up show on Iowa Catholic Radio. Both shows launched in 2016, and this episode marks an Iowa Catholic Radio mashup centered on one question — what does it mean to live a life well lived in light of eternity? The conversation grows out of Joe's recent loss of his father, who died after a fourteen-week battle with aggressive cancer. Joe shares the beauty found within that suffering: a death surrounded by family, the reception of communion and the sacrament of anointing, and a final afternoon of praying the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at his father's bedside. The discussion turns to the Church's teaching that we should never hasten death, and how that teaching preserved precious conversations, graces, and "teachable moments" that would otherwise have been lost. Highlights and themes include: The witness of service over selfishness — drawing on Joe's father, bookstore owner Lois Brookhart, Father Aquinas, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as everyday and saintly models Bishop Robert Barron's challenge that "your life is not about you" Memento mori and Ben Sasse's reflections on facing mortality Living the joy of the gospel without needing to be a scholar or apologist — the "little way" of St. Thérèse and the humble witness of Blessed Solanus Casey and St. John Henry Newman Balancing vocation, career, and intentional time with children Health span and stewardship of the body — referencing Peter Attia's Outlive — as a way to keep serving others well into old age Tim Carney's Family Unfriendly and resisting the "Instagram" sheen of family life The Uncommon Good is a production of Iowa Catholic Radio, exploring Catholic social teaching for everyday life. Thank you to Imogene Ingredients for helping to underwrite the show — learn more at imogeneingredients.com. Pray with us on air: the Rosary at 4:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 2:57 PM, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Rosary at 8:30 PM. You can also pray the Rosary anytime on the Iowa Catholic Radio app, available 24/7/365, and find upcoming diocesan events on our events page.
