Gilbert King | I've Given You the Truth

Gilbert King | I've Given You the Truth

How can a justice system allow an innocent man to remain in prison?
Bone Valley explores that maddening question and so much more.

What a thrill to conclude our series on WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS today with Gilbert King, the host of my favorite podcast this year, BONE VALLEY. Gilbert is also the Pulitzer prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove. HE has written two other NYT best-selling books and his work covers race, crime, and justice in America.

If you have already listened to BoneValley then you’ll leave hearing some of Gilbert’s behind-the-scenes discussion about the making of the show, and if you have not yet listened then you’ll also love hearing his passion and conviction for this nearly unbelievable story.

    BONE VALLEY OVERVIEW
IN 1987, 18-year-old Michelle Schofield was found dead in a phosphate pit in Florida. Two years later, her husband Leo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Fifteen years later, previously unidentified fingerprints matched Jeremy Scott--a violent teenager who lived nearby. Jeremy has since confessed to Michelle’s murder. Yet Leo Schofield remains behind bars.

Jason Flom + Maggie Freleng | The High Cost of Wrongful Convictions

In addition to the moral cost of incarcerating the innocent, it’s also literally expensive. Today’s guests are going to share about the high cost of wrongful convictions.

They are a dream team, a force to be reckoned with, a dynamic duo — and they are applying their talents to combat the horrors of wrongful convictions. Please welcome back Maggie Freleng and say hello to our first time guest, Jason Flom.

Maggie is a Pulitzer prize winning journalist and host of Wrongful Conviction with Maggie Freleng. Jason Flom is a music industry icon turned criminal justice advocate, reformer, and philanthropist. He created the podcast network, Lava for Good, and hosts Righteous Convictions.

Lauren Bright Pacheco | Justice is Not One Size Fits All

Lauren Bright Pacheco | Justice is Not One Size Fits All

What happens when political corruption leads to a wrongful conviction? Unfortunately, that’s what unfolds in the podcast, Murder in Oregon, hosted and produced by today’s guest, Lauren Bright Pacheco. Lauren is an Emmy award winning TV Producer who has parlayed her storytelling skills to podcasting. It’s in this medium that she discovered “audio activism” which has illuminated something I’ve been seeking for quite some time!

Join me as Lauren gives us insight into the horrifying story of Michael Franke’s murder, and Frank Gable’s wrongful conviction. Frank has been released and Lauren updates us on his case.

Be sure to to listen to the iheart podcast, Murder in Oregon and check out Lauren’s other shows via the links below:

Jeff Deskovic | What Happens to an Exoneree After Their Release?

Jeff Deskovic | What Happens to an Exoneree After Their Release?

What happens to an exoneree after they are released? Let's find out as we welcome BACK today’s guest, Jeff Deskovic. A truly remarkable human, Jeff is an exoneree, an advocate for criminal justice reform, a lawyer, and the founder of the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation.

I would encourage you to go back and listen to his first interview (which is two parts) on DIE-ALOGUE where Jeff shares his practically unbelievable story. He was wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of Angela Correa, only to be exonerated (on the grounds of ACTUAL innocence) 16 years later.

Listen to Jeff’s 1st interview on DIE-ALOGUE here:

Today he’s come back to help us understand what happens to an exoneree after their release. Listeners, prepare yourselves: it’s horrible. The better news is that Jeff is working tirelessly to change that and he gives us ways to join the cause. You don’t need to be rich, talented, or have a certain type of career- we can ALL do SOMETHING.

If you care about wrongful convictions, this conversation is a must listen. Please share! Resources listed below, including a link to Jeff’s Foundation’s Patreon page.
