Five Smooth Stones | How God Prepares You for the Battles Ahead What if the difficult seasons you thought were accomplishing nothing were actually preparing you for the battle ahead? In First Samuel 17, David chose five smooth stones from a brook before facing Goliath. Those stones had been shaped long before David ever knew he would need them. “And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.” — First Samuel 17:40 KJV David did not run toward Goliath empty-handed. He stopped at the brook. He chose his stones carefully. And then he moved toward the giant. In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and explore what the five smooth stones can teach us about God’s preparation, trusting God through difficult seasons, and the relationship between faith and preparation. The word smooth matters. Those stones had not always looked that way. Water flowing over them again and again had gradually worn away what was rough, jagged, and uneven until they became exactly what David needed. The brook had been preparing the stones long before the battle arrived. God often works similarly in our lives. Through a personal reflection on my years as a paramedic and how those experiences later prepared me for ministry, we consider how God can use difficult conversations, grief, pressure, painful circumstances, and seemingly ordinary seasons to shape something in us that He will use later. You may not recognize the preparation while it is happening. David probably never stood beside that brook watching the stones become smooth. Yet when the battle arrived, what he needed was waiting. Preparation is not the opposite of faith. It can be an expression of faith. David trusted God completely, but he still chose his stones carefully. He brought what was available, used what God had taught him, and approached the battle prepared. Faith and preparation worked together. Maybe you’ve wondered why God allowed certain seasons in your life. Maybe you’ve questioned what could possibly have come from the pressure, disappointment, difficult work, grief, or years that seemed to produce nothing. What if the brook was doing more than you could see? What if God was shaping something in you? The giant may be ahead, but God has been preparing you long before you could see the battle. The brook wasn’t wasting your time. It was smoothing your stones.
