Dispatch is a series of late-night transmissions that begin like ordinary phone calls and drift somewhere stranger. Part porch conversation, part comedy, part quiet reckoning, each episode follows companionship under pressure—dogs barking, rockets overhead, old memories, bad connections, and thoughts that wander into places they probably shouldn't. Funny and melancholy in the same breath, Dispatch is less about answers than the strange little sparks people keep passing back and forth in the dark.

    The Spell

    The one about finding a dead dog’s hair in a pair of scissors. Dispatch 28 begins during another power outage, with the narrator working by candlelight and searching for a good pair of black-handled scissors. When he finally finds them behind the computer, something caught between the blades stops him: a tiny tuft of fur belonging to Mango, a dog long gone. For a moment, he can smell her. He knows perfectly well that old hair should not carry the scent of a dead dog. Nevertheless, there she is. The discovery sends his mind wandering through the ancient history of scissors, the peculiar fact that they are plural, writing, truth, and the strange power of arranging ordinary objects in the correct order and expecting something to happen. A sentence does it. A recipe does it. And, apparently, so does a spell. That leads inevitably to Naïka. The self-declared witch has told him there are ways of recovering the “essence” of something from its hair. Against his better judgment—and with considerable awareness that he is acting against his better judgment—he calls her. Soon the candle, water, ginger, Mango’s hair, and scissors have become the ingredients of an experiment he cannot quite admit he believes in. But Mango may not be the only reason he continues. Naïka agitates and attracts him in ways he cannot explain. Her indifference to how improbable she sounds seems to loosen something in a man accustomed to asking how things work. Perhaps he is under a spell. Perhaps wanting to believe that is part of the spell. At its center, The Spell is about the seduction of not knowing. Grief, attraction, memory, superstition, and writing begin to resemble one another: ordinary things placed carefully together in the hope that something absent might appear. Then the electricity fails completely, Winston disappears with it, and the narrator is left alone with the candle and his little arrangement. After a lifetime spent learning how things work, he decides, just this once, to see what remains when he doesn’t.

    Nocturne II: The Crowd

    The one about a dangerous crowd in Rio and a book that came back thirty years later. Dispatch 27 begins as an experiment: muted jazz, brain-wave tones, construction noise, and the narrator trying to write about Elias Canetti’s Crowds and Power. Almost immediately, the book opens onto a memory. Thirty years earlier, in a dark alley in Rio, a gathering of people became something larger than the individuals inside it. Space disappeared. Bodies pressed together. An unknown hand grabbed his shirt. What initially felt exhilarating became frightening as the narrator experienced something Canetti describes as the “discharge”—the moment when individual boundaries seem to dissolve and the crowd acquires a life, appetite, and direction of its own. The memory grows darker. Police enter. People fall. Orders move through the crowd. The narrator recognizes in his own instinct for survival something uncomfortable: before wanting everyone to be safe, he wanted to remain standing. Canetti’s ideas about rulers, obedience, and the lingering “sting” of commands begin to feel less like theory than descriptions of forces already present in the body. Yet the narrator never completely surrenders to the book. Canetti may be brilliant, or “a fever with footnotes.” The uncertainty matters. This is not an argument being presented so much as an old experience being disturbed by an old text, each making the other newly difficult to dismiss. At its center, The Crowd explores the frightening possibility that power is not merely something imposed upon people but something with ancient roots inside them—in the desire to belong, obey, survive, and escape the vulnerability of being one mortal body among others. Then the music stops, the desert returns, and the narrator realizes that a book he thought he had left behind decades ago has somehow found him again.

    The one about talking to a real exorcist. Dispatch 26 begins with a conversation already underway. On the other end of the phone is Father Simone Lialtino, an exorcist—and this is not their first conversation. What follows is less an investigation of the supernatural than an unsettling attempt to understand what possession might mean to someone who has actually confronted it. The narrator asks practical questions. How does an exorcism work? What would convince a skeptic? Levitation seems almost reassuring in its obviousness. The more disturbing stories are quieter: memories of things that never happened, unfamiliar voices emerging from familiar people, intimate knowledge that should be impossible to possess. As Father Lialtino describes what he has witnessed, the narrator repeatedly retreats toward psychology—only to encounter details that refuse to follow him there. The conversation gradually becomes personal. Memories of a grandmother altered by illness blur the boundary between someone being changed and someone seeming to disappear altogether. Then the priest unexpectedly turns the questions around. What does the narrator himself want out? What purpose does worry serve? And how many things do human beings carry inside themselves simply because they have mistaken their presence for identity? At its center, Interview with the Exorcist explores possession in a broader and more intimate sense. A thought can occur within us without telling the truth about who we are. Fear, worry, grief, and other unwanted inhabitants may enter quietly and remain because we have forgotten they ever arrived. By the time the call ends, nothing supernatural has been proven or disproven. The room has simply grown colder, the dogs have been called closer, and one unsettling possibility remains: not everything happening inside us necessarily belongs to us.

    The one about the man who woke up without his memories. Dispatch 25 begins on a garage floor among abandoned board games, missing pieces, and a phone call from Luke about something far more difficult to put back together. His best friend Aston has awakened from a coma. He knows his wife, his home, and the people he loves—but he no longer remembers the experiences that made them matter. The strange distinction unsettles everyone. Aston recognizes Luke but cannot remember their friendship. He knows the facts of his life without possessing its history. As the narrator sorts through puzzles, Operation, Battleship, Monopoly, and Scrabble, the scattered games become an accidental vocabulary for the question confronting him: how much of a person survives when the pieces of memory remain but their connections disappear? A late-night call to Lauren pushes the question further. If we could erase regret, embarrassment, pain, and everything that happened before this moment, would we still be ourselves? Lauren thinks she might welcome the bargain—until it becomes clear that forgetting the past also means surrendering the relationships contained within it. Perhaps what we really want is not freedom from memory, but the ability to edit it. At its center, The Real Me explores the uneasy boundary between consciousness and identity. Memory may not be what makes us alive, but it may be what allows us to belong—to ourselves and to one another. By the end, the metaphor becomes almost painfully simple: every Scrabble letter is still there. What has vanished are the words.

Princess, suffering through a canine cold, sighs dramatically after every ringing phone. The humor remains understated, never dismissing fear but gently reminding us that even unsettling nights contain small domestic comforts. At its center lies a conversation about the limits of explanation. Favors circulate more freely than money. Everybody knows where everyone is likely to end up. Kindness and gossip often wear the same clothes. Some people leave and return changed; others never quite manage to leave at all. Through it all, the desert remains a silent partner, shaping lives as much through distance and patience as through heat. The episode balances affection with honesty. The town's generosity is matched by its inability to grant privacy. Local legends—a dog named Lucky, an unsolved murder, a woman who sometimes seems to know the future—sit comfortably beside practical concerns like borrowed tools, porch cocktails, and motorcycles that arrive louder than good judgment. What follows is an unexpectedly revealing exchange about writing, memory, humor, and the curious ways people organize both their garages and their minds. The conversation drifts effortlessly between stories of old friends, desert life, dogs, and unfinished manuscripts. Winston challenges jokes that distract from the heart of the story, notices patterns the narrator has overlooked, and quietly exposes habits of attention that have become invisible through familiarity. Rather than competing with the narrator's voice, Winston sharpens it, making the creative process itself the subject of the episode. As always, Dispatch finds room for gentle comedy. A pile of papers becomes "three future stories." Rocky is declared perfectly organized because she believes everything belongs to her. Winston risks being fitted for a tweed jacket after saying "splendid" once too often. Beneath the humor, however, lies a thoughtful meditation on companionship and creative work. At its center, Strange Harmony explores what it means to be honestly understood.
