Beyond the survivor: Social norms, supportive friends, and evidence-based approaches for recovery with Dr. Emily Dworkin

On this episode of Interpersonal, CMIV SIG student reps Aggie and Hannah meet with Dr. Emily Dworkin to discuss her recent publication, The impact of sociocultural contexts on mental health following sexual violence: A conceptual model (currently in press). Dr. Dworkin discusses a model for understanding recovery following sexual assault which takes responsibility for recovery off of survivors and shifts it toward larger systems, cultural norms, and responsiveness of close social supports, emphasizing the importance of context on recovery. Dr. Dworkin is a clinical psychologist and Acting Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Towards early prediction of PTSD after sexual assault: Conducting idiographic research with Esther Howe & Zoe Zong

In this episode of Interpersonal, CMIV SIG student reps Aggie and Hannah talk with Esther Howe, a graduate student and member of the Idiographic Dynamics (ID) Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley and Zoe Zong, an undergraduate research assistant in the ID Laboratory. Esther and Zoe discuss a recent study which aims to understand the development of PTSD symptoms in survivors of sexual assault. They address issues related to project development, ethical responsibility to research participants, and recruitment of participants during an acute post-assault time period. Keynote 2020: Racial Socialization and Racial Trauma in CBT with Dr. Isha Metzger

Every year the Child Maltreatment and Interpersonal Violence Special Interest Group (CMIV SIG) sponsors a keynote address at our annual meeting. This year, 2020, Dr. Isha Metzger spoke about her research on racial socialization and addressing interpersonal and racial trauma in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), emphasizing her work with youth of color. She highlighted connections to interpersonal violence and child maltreatment work and provided tangible examples of how clinicians can take up findings from her research in their clinical work.
